Dawid Mockč wins in Gordon's Bay to throw Discovery Sunglass Hut Surfski PDF Print E-mail

Strand - Dawid Mockè threw the race for the Discovery Sunglass Surfski series wide open when he won his second series title in the weather-affected Island Tribe Daniel Conradie Memorial race at the Strand.

With two races left in the series Dawid Mockè and his brother Jasper have both won two races, with Graeme Solomon, Tom Schilperoort and Sean Rice right on their tails with solitary victories each and a string of second and third places between them.

With the peninsula being buffeted by a gale force South Easter, the race organiser Herbert Conradie had the interests of the paddlers uppermost in his mind in setting a course that stated in the shelter of Gordon's Bay before finishing with a downwind leg in the Strand Surf Lifesaving club.

Dawid Mockè, buoyed by being crowned world champ at the Hong Kong Dragon run where he finished runner up to Tim Jacobs last weekend, turned up the heat on the downwind leg to shake off the challenge from Sean Rice, Tom Schilperoort and last week’s winner Graeme Solomon.

“It was a good race in hard conditions, though having the wind to assist on two of the legs made it a fast race,” said Mocke. “It was a pity there was not much swell on the downwind leg home, but a fun and enjoyable race all the same.”

Sprinter Shaun Rubenstein paddled into sixth overall, thoroughly enjoying his introduction to surfski racing, just holding off rising star school boy Dom Notten, who had plenty to do to take the U18 honours from the plucky Craig Flanagan.

Alexa Cole was a comfortable winner in the women's race, showing off the form that took her to the top step of the podium in Hong Kong last weekend, with the minor placing being settled between second placed Donia Kamstra and Bianca Beavitt.

“It’s just amazing when the southeaster blows” said Alexa afterwards, “When you are so close to the mountain it just swirls around”

The men’s doubles race was won by Strand’s Gary Cromie and Pieter Kruger, followed by Brendon Currin and Willem Erasmus and the now familiar pairing of Daantjie Malan and Pierre Andre Rabie.

Rabie, runner up in the 2011 Windhoek Berg Canoe Marathon, was full of praise for the surfski scene which he has just started competing in and was happy to announce that he had just bought a single ski and was looking forward to racing up with the elite men.

The mixed Doubles was won by Nick Rocky and Gill Anderson with husband and wife team of Rob and Liz Hart second.

The Series moves to Long Beach Kommetjie for race 8 of the series, The Butler’s Pizza LBK Challenge on Sunday 4 December. This is the penultimate event of the series after which paddlers look forward to The Ultra Distance Cape Point Challenge on the 17th of December. More details can be found at www.surfski.co.za
