The 20 km Wyzersdrift K2, raced on the Breede River in fairly low conditions and between the Darling Bridge at the foot of  Bain’s Kloof and Wyzersdrift, had 83 paddlers complete the section, this the second of the K2 races on the Breede River of the K2 season and which will culminate in the annual Breede River K2 Marathon on 3rd/4th September.

The somewhat smaller field was more a result of the race being held at the end of a long weekend, but the competition was no less as intense up front and between the various categories racing.

 kING, Glass

Final sprint for the line by the winning K2 and K1: Lance King (Milnerton) the K1, Edgar Boehm jnr/Alasdair Glass (Peninsula/Peninsula)  in the K2

The first canoe across the line was again the K1 of Lance King (Milnerton), when he was able to outsprint the Peninsula Canoe Club pairing of Edgar Boehm jnr/Alasdair Glass, after these two crews had raced virtually alone from about 5 kms into the race when they broke up the leading bunch after the second portage,  leaving Ivan Kruger/Stuart MacLaren (Cty/Cty) in their wake. Not that it was plain sailing for these leading crews, Boehm/Glass getting stuck under the railings of a low-level bridge that they thought they could get under (!) and then having to give chase after King by portaging across the tip of an island when they had taken an incorrect channel in the latter stage of the race. Coming together without about 2 kms left, a game of ‘cat and mouse’ developed until in the final sprint, King was able to get his nose ahead of the double to be first canoe home.

There was again a paucity of Senior Women’s K2 crews (just 2), Marisa Pretorius/She-Earl de Wee (Mil/Paarl) – who are also a Junior (U18) crew, being home first from the Pen/UCT combination of Shannon MacLean/Cleo Forster, who developed steering problems with about 6 km to go.

Women’s K2 (and Junior U18 crew)

The Mixed doubles, featuring 9 K2’s were led home by the Milnerton pairing of Chris de Waal/Lisa Scott (5th overall), Maties Robyn Kime/Mike Owen coming home 2nd , with Paarl’s Mzamo-Wayne August/Anina Koch  taking the 3rd position. As was noticed on the Saturday Breede race, the Mixed Doubles section of the Breede River races is going to be very competitive indeed this season with any one of perhaps 4 crews who can take the title, so interesting times ahead in that category.

Lisa & Chris

Mixed Double, Chris de Waal and Lisa Scott (Milnerton/Milnerton)

Ivan Kruger/Stuart MacLaren (Cty/Cty) were the 1st U21’s home, followed by Paarl’s Emile Minnaar/Jerome Willemse in 2nd.

In the Junior categories, Paarl’s Michael Farringer/Daniel Pretorius posted the excellent overall position of 4th to be the top U16 paddlers on the day with Michael Pretorius/Charles Nieuwoudt (Mil/Prl) in 2nd spot.

Michael Daniel

  U16 K2, Michael Farringer/Daniel Pretorius (Paarl/Paarl)

Marisa Pretorius/She-Earl de Wee (Mil/Paarl) and already mentioned were the 1st U18 paddlers in a K2 to complete the race.

There was quite a large contingent of K1’s who competed, Lance King (Mil) taking 1st, his K2 partner (!!) Heinrich Schloms (Paarl) 2nd whilst Master’s canoeist, Paarl’s Mynhardt Marais was 3rd across the line.
