Download full results HERE The WCCU canoe race held on Monday 9th August (Public Holiday – Ladies Day), was held (this time!) on the Breede River, as the rains that fell on Saturday night and on Sunday raised the river levels sufficiently and in any case, this section of the river is a long way upstream from the pumps that are taking water from the Breede River into the Brandvlei Dam. This race is always ‘fast and furious’ and on Monday, this was no exception to the rule.
The K2 crew of Matie Pierre-Andre Rabie and Patrick Birkett, came home in 1st place in the good time of 1 hour, 7 minutes and 23 seconds for the 18km section, closely followed by Lance King – still racing in his K1, albeit that this was another official K2 event! Edgar Boehm jnr, have found a partner in fellow Peninsula CC club mate, Joe Kearney was 3rd boat home, 2nd K2 whilst Alastair Glass (Pen), also in a K1 was 4th overall (2nd K1) and Richard McMartin and James Birkett (CTY/UCT) were the 3rd K2 to cross the line at Wyzersdrift. In the Women’s section, Kim Brugmann and Anna Notten (both Pen) and a young and upcoming women’s crew took line honours, followed home by Lis Hart/Lisa Scott (Pen/Mil) in another disappointing turnout of women’s paddlers. In the mixed doubles, Richard Fly and fiancée’, Letitia Steenkamp (both Maties) continued their winning form from Saturday’s race to win from Louw van Riet and Kirsten Penderis (also, both Maties) and the sister/brother combination from Milnerton, Marisa and Michael Pretorius again securing 3rd spot. The scene is now set to resume racing on the Breede, leading up to the Breede River K2 marathon on 4th and 5th September, between Robertson and Swellendam. Results; Senior Men – K2. 1.
