Mark has decided to hand over the reigns to Toti Canoe Club from 2011. Marc, thanks for your awesome support of this event over the years! Looking at Windguru Yesterday, it looked like a fresh SW wind(20km/hr) Predicted for Sunday which would have seen us start @ Umkomaas for an 18km downwind race to Toti Canoe Club. I pushed out an sms to 20 people to get feedback about what people would prefer Either: 1: 18km Umko to Toti or: 2: 27km Scottburgh to Toti The responses were equally divided as follows 1: Umko Toti - Lekker Fast 18km Downwind race. Bring it ON! 2: Scott Toti - 27km is Good Scott 2 Brighton Training I was considering the 27km Scott-Toti D/Wind option because I thought that everyone would want the extra distance. I was wrong, half the respondents want the exciting 18km downwind race where they can go flat out for the whole race without having to conserve. After all said and done, I could NOT have organised the 27km Scott-Toti as the rescue back up that I have in place can only do the Umko-Toti in the first place. Looking at Windguru this morning, everything has changed. Once again I have fallen int othe TRAP of getting ahead of the weather prediction. We will all simply have to WAIT AND SEE what the weather delivers and then I will do the best I can with the resources that I have at hand. Safety KIT ! Cell Phone, Leash and lifejacket. Compulsory for ALL. Race Start Time: 10am Reg Close at : 9:30am Race Course will be sent Via sms on Saturday Evening Race will be started in Batches according to Grades. Please check your grades on www.surfski.co.za under the results section. NEW Grading RULE: Series registered paddlers who are Graded for the Current Season, can move between Single and Double ski participation and start races with their current grade. Non-registered paddlers WILL NOT be allowed to enter the race. Very N.B. PFD’s (life jackets) are compulsory | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- GA Andre’s Farm to the Meyerton Caravan Park After the last two Klip races which were from the Pipes and included very technical tricky sneaks and difficult maneuvering through the trees, the VLC Klip race will be pure good fun – plop plop plop down the Klip rapids!! It adds to the fun to yell RIDE EM COWBOY or YEEHAA as you bounce along the rapids! Come along and enjoy the fun, gain experience, learn from your mistakes, get some training in which is bound to be a lot more fun than round and round in circles at the dams / lakes! Dress warmly with heli’s and chill cheaters as any swim in the cold water may mean you will not have a chance to warm up for the rest of the race and can lead to hypothermia…… but fast hard paddling on the flats between the rapids should warm you up properly and we have all survived mid winter swims without any long term damage so be brave – you are a canoeist !!! we’re a tough breed!!! Mine rapid, Henley Weir Portage, Henley Weir Crossing, Broken Weir, Little Klip Rapid, Sportsground rapid and Sportsground Bridge, Pump house rapid, Double Drop and home to Caravan park! For the beginners and those NEW to the Klip river, if you would like a detailed description of the rapids and what to expect and some advice on what is generally recognized as the best lines to use, please feel free to email me and I will gladly send you a novice description which MAY be helpful! This stretch of Klip is great fun for your seconds and family who may also want to take photos – they can catch you at the Henley Weir Portage, at Sportsground rapid or bridge (they wont make it to both and catch you both times unless you have a couple of swims along the way!) at Double Drop and then there is the exciting finish at caravan park rapid which tends to have a high swim probability of about 40% of the field! But luckily at that stage you are home already with warm clothes, and hot drinks near at hand! (not hot showers YET but the toilet sub committee ARE working on that thanks to the monies raised by yourselves - at the Toilet Race!) OR convince your second to come along in order to have a toasted sandwich and coffee at the Little Klip Coffee shop where they can spend an enjoyable hour while waiting for you and even catch you going through the rapid! There will always be a pre race briefing which is really important for paddlers to listen to as any changes or problems that may have arisen in the past days will be addressed. Watch out for your landing if you shoot the Mine Rapid on the right channel as the eddy at the bottom seems to throw unsuspecting paddlers out – surely a result of lack of concentration because the relief at having made the rapid successfully and knowing it is behind you makes you relax and a little caution may be a good thing as you land in the pool at the bottom! Two areas requiring some attention would be the Saloojees Bridge (otherwise known as one of the many Heidelberg Bridges) which is a few kms after Henley Weir which is badly tree blocked but has sneaks on both the extreme RIGHT which is tight and difficult to line up with, or the far left which is definitely a more recommended choice to avoid tangling with the tree logs in the middle in front of the bridge. The current before the bridge is kinder to a left crossing than a tight right turn and line up for less experienced paddlers. At Broken weir, remember to shoot on the LEFT side of the river NOT right – how do you know you are approaching Broken Weir? There is a pumphouse on the RIGHT bank just before the rapid and you can HEAR THE RUMBLE of the water over the rocks!! Seconding / shuttling – make arrangements with other paddlers in your area and take turns arranging a second – do a quick shuttle to the finish with the second bringing you back to the start timeously! Best luck, - ENJOY and have fun!!! They are 9th, 10th, 11th & 12th December 2010. So its only a quick 2 days leave for locals. The format will be the traditional one which we have come to know with the race being turned in extreme conditions. Qualifying times and distances will be strictly enforced and Anton has had chats with Peter Cole & Billy Harket to assist in this regard. Safety is always a concern on these epic longer distance races so we need to make sure everyone that starts the race is fit enough to cope with any sudden Big Easterlies that blow in. Finish will be at Orient Beach, closer to the time Anton will be looking for volunteers to assist with the logistics of the race. Why not use Breede and Fish as your training base, and then it's just a chip and a put. You can do it !! See you on the water. Cape Town – The organisers of the 2010 Windhoek Berg River Canoe Marathon have extended the closing dates for entries by a week to cater for the anticipated last minute rush of entries. Entries will be taken until 12h00 on Wednesday 7 July. Entry forms are available from the race website here 29 year old Paarl star Heinrich Schloms’ entry is confirmed. A veteran of ten berg’s, Schloms has been a key players in the evolution of the race for the overall title in recent years. “I’m all fired up and raring to go” said Schloms from the winelands today, whose early entry sits alongside the entries of respected marathoners Greg van Heerden, Enslin van Riet, Chris de Waal and Durban racer Marc Holtzhausen. The second entry received at the race HQ came from Berg icon Giel van Deventer, signalling his intentions of completing a record 41st Berg. Van Deventer and André Collins hold the record of 40 Bergs successfully completed. “Its been a topsy-turvy year so far, particularly with the distraction of the soccer, and paddlers have been a little slow off the mark,” said race administrator Laura van Heerden. “We are getting a lot of enquries and questions, and are anticipating a deluge of last minute entries.” She added that the race was creating a novel “Barn experience” for paddlers keen to savour the experience of the race through the Winelands and the Swartland to the West Coast. This involves contestants dropping their overnight possessions, wrapped in a plastic bag provided by the race organisers, at the start, from where they will be transported to brns at each overnight stop. “A bonfire, glass of red wine and warm barn can then await each paddler at the end of the day’s canoeing,” said Van Heerden. Any questions relating to the above can be directed to the Race Secretary, Laura van Heerden on 0847002742 or

One of our Juniors, Katleho Success Mahlaba, took part in the K1 men’s race. Success is over there for Junior Worlds in a few weeks and was drafted into this, his first ever World Cup. It was a serious baptism of fire and he struggled in his 1st run but was heaps better in the 2nd. The rules have changed in slalom though, and now your best time for both runs counts and unfortunately he came last. BUT he’s in good company because in 1996 Seu was also my 1st ever World Cup in Europe, and I also came stone last! So he’s going to have to take it on the chin and move on. Cyp and Master were faster in their 2nd run but still picked up 4 seconds in penalties. They will have to drop to the floor and give me 400 press-ups when I see them again! The guys have been there for over 2 months so I’m sure they pretty tired too. They came in 30th out of 33 boats. It’s their 1st season in C2 with Master having moved over from the single (C1) into a double (C2) {Master’s never raced in K1 as I saw in a report last week?} They are now off to Augsburg for next weekends final World Cup in Germany. I’m sure they will post a better result because they both know the course really well since they 1st raced on it at the 2003 World Champs. As far as all the other racing goes today doesn’t really mean anything for the big guns. The top 40 K1 men each have one run (semi-final) tomorrow morning and the top 10 progress to the final, again off a clean sheet. This new format has made the racing very exciting and entertaining. The Americans are on top of the start list with the wonder boy of last weekend, Canada’s John Hastings only managing 28th position. Of note is that Stepanke Hilgertova came 2nd today in the K1 Ladies but remember tomorrow is what counts :-) The Hochsorner Twins are making the others fight it out for the Silver in C2 like they normally do. Finally in C1 the “Rubber Man” aka Czech paddler Stanislav I-can-bend-my-body-360-degrees-in-an-upsteam Jezek is leading. Let the games begin tomorrow! Ball and Nel's lights were seen crossing the dam wall at Diemersfontein at 1:48am. Despite the late hour Ball's two children were wide awake and excited by their father's return. The adventure racing duo were part of the first group of riders to leave Pietermaritzburg on Saturday 12 June 2010 and successfully completed the 2400km race in 16 days and 20 hours. Whilst they had not set out to win the race or new records they were determined to remain the first two tyre tracks on the race course. Entering the last third of the race the determined pair started riding substantial distances and, over the last few days, worked off very little sleep as they rode deep into the night. Leaving the support station at Rouxpos in the Swartberg foothills on Sunday morning Ball and Nel rode over 200 kms through the Anysberg Nature Reserve, across the Little Karoo to Montagu and on to MacGregor arriving just before midnight. They slept for an hour and then continued on, following the old wagon route over Coeniesrivier into the Agterkliphoogte Valley. Resisting the lure of great food and hospitality at the Oestervanger Guest House on the farm Kasra they then continued over the Trappieskraal to Trouthaven in the valley of the Holsloot, arriving in the early afternoon of Monday. Aware of the 10 km portage up the valley of the Stettynskloof that lay ahead they then pushed on. Arriving at the Stettynskloof Dam with three hours of daylight remaining, the fatigued pair elected to run the footpath that now threads its way up the valley, rather than risk having to find their way through at night. In the last light of the day they emerged from the valley and were able to pick their way down to the Elandspad jeeptrack. The last 22 kms of the race route from the Elandspad through to the finish at Diemersfontein Wine Estate normally take riders 2 hours to complete. It took the exhausted Ball and Nel 8 hours. Notwithstanding their debilitated state the two arrived in Diemersfontein in high spirits, "it was the best adventure yet" Trevor Ball "you think 16 days is impossible but then you get there and you find you can. Unbelievable fun." The two were being chased across in the latter half of the race by fellow adventurer Alex Harris. At one point Harris was only 6 hours behind them. However, their long nights and little sleep allowed them to keep ahead of him. Alex Harris, the Freedom Challenge dark horse, arrived in Diemersfontein 12 hours after Ball and Nel, finishing on Tuesday June 29th at 14h10. Harris who started in Pietermaritzburg three days behind them, was forced to chase the two across the country, "you know what it's like chasing after 2 tire tracks for 14 days and to know that you are moving faster then them but still can't catch them" Harris completed his race in 14 days 8 hours and 10 minutes, the second fastest recorded time in the history of the Freedom Challenge. Whilst this was Harris’ first Race Across South Africa it was not his first time on the race course "I spent time in some of the tricky sections to make sure that I didn't have any navigation issues" Harris credits his quick time to sticking to his race strategy. "My strategy was to ride strong every day and avoid doing risky portages at night". True to his strate gy Harris arrived at the final support station at Trouthaven at 15h40 on Monday. When some of the other serious contenders and veteran campaigners might have pushed into the night, Harris bunked down for the night; "I wanted to do Stettyns in the light so I could see the path but also to appreciate the beauty of the valley after a very long race" Firmly settled in at Diemersfontein, Harris must now wait to see how the rest of the field fares. Leading contender, Carl Crous, left the support station at Cambria on Sunday night at midnight and rode up the length of the Baviaanskloof to Willowmore, arriving in the late afternoon. Leaving again at midnight he continued across the expanse of the Moordenaars Karoo to Prince Albert. However, like so many of the riders further back in the field he was lashed by gale force winds and often forced to push his bike. Despite arriving in Prince Albert in the early afternoon and marginally ahead of Harris on lapsed time, he stopped for the day, stating “The wind has taken it out of me. My race is over”. However, by midnight he was on the move again and it must now be seen whether he can better the pace of Harris over the last 500 kms of the race. Elsewhere in the field, Giant rider Glenn Harrison riding a 29er seems set to better the existing single speed record for the Freedom Challenge Race Across South Africa. After battling corrugations and rain in the Moordenaars Karoo, Harrison was then confronted with heavy headwinds as he rode across the Little Karoo towards Montagu. Now, with a small weather window, he is riding towards the Stettynskloof and the possibility of finishing on Wednesday, a day behind Harris with whom he started in Pietermaritzburg and at least 5 days inside the existing single speed record that was set by Andre Britz in 2006. Thanks guys – from the entries which were over 50 boats – a goodly number for an unplanned race, to the generous donations for hot dogs (our organizers never want to sell them again at normal prices!), donations received from FLCC for rolls, Oros and condiments, subsidized time keeping charge, paddlers waiving their prize monies, GCU waiving their levies –(Well, we were gonna touch them next for the monies needed so they had an invested interest!), support from Esor (Bernie Crone) for massive earth moving equipment and hard work and efforts from Gavin Steyl and the tree clearing crews using money, time and effort – we raised an amount in small excess of R4000 – well done! The reason for needing to fix up the ablutions at Caravan park which is a municipal facility fallen into disuse having been vandalized, is the problems with Dave’s farm where the use of the farm for canoe races was withdrawn due to personal problems and the financial need to sell the land so alternatives were looked for. After discussions with the municipality in Meyerton, they agreed to provide exclusive use of the ablutions for canoeists who will hold the keys, maintain and repair as required for the monies that paddlers normally pay for use of facilities. The municipality provides a gate guard and patroller as well as keeping the grounds in condition with grass cutting and litter collections. There are Male AND Female ablutions with more than one toilet/shower to share and canoeists used the Danie Maclean park historically as a finish spot . It also provides excellent entertainment for seconds and family members to watch their paddlers shooting the final and possibly most tricky rapid! Good photo spot too! Trainees, learners and proficiency preparation trips are frequently arranged at caravan park with brunches and lunches for family members and the unavailability of these toilets has been a sad loss for regular trippers as well which also prompted the drive to attempt to recover the situation. Back to the fundraiser race, the mobile toilet units that we had organized for the start and finish for the race did not materialize – we still have no idea what went wrong with this communication / arrangement! Our apologies…..! we will track down the elusive toilets and driver and take appropriate action!! Feedback once again is that the top paddlers loved the stretch to race on as it provided more interesting technical challenges than just plop plop plopping down the fairly simple Klip rapids as usual, with numerous obstacles to manouevre but less boat damaging than the rock strewn Jukskei river. Paddlers likened the stretch to demanding technical races such as the Liebensvlei Tracker race and the stretch provided learners with a crash course in handling tree infested areas. Learners were only able to participate due to low and slow winter water levels as in fast flowing rivers these tree blocks and sneaks could be extremely dangerous to canoeists – please do not underestimate the danger of tree blocks in fast flowing water! Certainly more work had been done on the section since last weeks race, but there are still tight turns and submerged logs where doubles got stuck, however the number of withdrawals was greatly reduced from 10 to 3! Of course, the sunny day and pleasant temperatures helped! The winner of the race was Alex Roberts (DAB) by one second finishing the 26km stretch in 1:53:45 in a sprint finish against Ryan Simonato (JCC) who finished in 1:53:46, while the third place position was taken by Tom Ngcobo of Likkewaan Club in 1:58:33 (U21). The juniors have come out of hibernation and Emile Theunissen (FLCC) finished fourth overall as the first Under 16 and top junior in 1:58:54 beating FLCC’s Shaun Maphanga by some two minutes! ( In fairness Maphanga has let his canoeing training slide as he participated in his first Comrades this year earning a Bill Rowan medal! ) Roy Clegg (VIC) finished in 7th place as the first SUB VET in 2:02 with ERK’s A team winning the K2 race in 8th place in 2:03 - Vallon Kupferberg and Jarryd Breeds. Gavin Steyl who has been practicing on this stretch and has no doubt a few hidden sneaks in place finished as first Sub Master in 2:04 with the next winners in being the first Mixed Double with Sydney Olwagen and Martin Kerr (JCC) in 2:12. Warren Ziervogel finished as first Vet in 2:13 (JCC) The winning Sub Grand Master in this K1 race was Jan Leonard (WAT) in 2:33 with Delport Van Schalkwyk as the first Master in 2:38 (Crocs). Well done to Kevin Holmes who finished as the first and only Grand Master on this sunny winter day (DAB) in 2:45 and the ladies – K2 3:02 – Minnie Kretzschmar and Jennie Dallas (FLCC) and Christine Human the top and only K1 lady finisher (DAB) in 3:07! Thanks again to Gavin and crews who have worked in this stretch to provide training and challenge opportunities for Gauteng paddlers, also to FLCC who organized the entries, start and finish as well as refreshments and Watuni for providing the sweeps. JENNIE DALLAS GCU --------------------------------------------------------------- SCHOOLS LEAGUE RACE Florida Lake Canoe Club hosted the school league race on an amazingly warm balmy sunny pleasant day on Saturday 26 June with more than 30 juniors participating with more than half of the participants being development paddlers proving the efforts from Gauteng Canoe Union and clubs to integrate the sport are making great strides! Since clubs have to organize and manage their own school league races now, it was certainly a challenge as it was the first time and there were a number of hiccups to overcome but it is highly doubtful that the juniors had any complaints as they had a super time with prizes gifts and toys donated as prizes, as well as feasts of food from hotdogs, doughnuts, juices, oranges and chips provided for those who could not afford to buy their own. The older juniors ended up doing an additional 1km lap as a result of following their leaders, which no doubt will improve their training program and look good in their log books although it caused some confusion for the lap counters! The next School League race will be hosted at Dabulamanzi on the long weekend of 9 August – LADIES DAY…..WOMEN’s DAY! Low levels being approximately a metre lower than the previous weekend when the annual Swartland K1 canoe marathon had been held in almost perfect conditions and where the weather played along with the river was at a medium level. This lowered water level meant that several of the tree blocks that canoeists had managed to paddle over during the 'Swartland', either had to be portaged, ramped, or struggled through, thus slowing down the overall pace of the race, the winners coming home in just under 2 hours 30 minutes. Racing on such levels also requires clever tactics - knowing where the blocks are so as to get to them first to help with the getaway break whilst those behind are struggling through - but which can also work against paddlers, as the canoeists behind, seeing someone up front struggling, may look for and find simpler ways through. And further back in the field, those paddlers with less experience and skill and who don't know the river and its obstacles as well often cause bottlenecks which frustrates and slows down the field behind them - often with colourful language! With the field of over 90 canoeists lining up in typical Berg River starting conditions - i.e. fairly thick mist, the paddlers got away when Scott Baker fired the gun, sprinting away down a narrow, slowly flowing river until reaching the first tree block when the leading bunch of some 10 paddlers was whittled down to 6, Lance King (Milnerton) Pierre-Andre Rabie (Maties), Graeme Solomon (Peninsula), Sean Rice (Pen), Alasdair Glass (Pen) and Greg van Heerden (Mil), as just a narrow gap allowed paddlers through virtually one at a time. Back in the field, in about positions 15 to 20, two canoes jammed the gap and turned broadside after being rammed from behind and then from the side, which created general chaos and led those paddlers behind this snarl up to opt to portage or some, to find a sneak through the block by ducking and pulling through branches on river left. King, back on the Berg after campaigning in Plettenberg Bay at the annual S.A. Canoe Marathon Championships, where he sustained a strained Achilles Tendon, cracked on the pace and soon, with Rabie and Solomon had established a leading group of 3 paddlers, paddling away from the rest of the field. Some 6 km from Zonqwasdrift and at the same tree block that gave Solomon trouble in the Swartland canoe marathon, fate stepped in again and whilst Solomon struggled to get through it (after going in first), King and Rabie took a better, clearer route to paddle away from him to go under the Zonqwasdrift bridge a good minute and a half in the lead. For the remainder of the race, King and Rabie swopped the lead until over the final few hundred metres, the cat 'n mouse game turned into a serious sprint for the line with King taking the race by 1 second from Rabie (see attached photo - left, Pierre Andre Rabie, Maties, 2nd, and right, Lance King, Milnerton, 1st - PLEASE CREDIT JOHN HISHIN, Drumbeat Photography - a higher resolution photo is available of required for publication purposes). Solomon was third, over 5 minutes off the pace. In the Women's race, Jemma Hofmeyer (Peninsula) had an easy cruise to victory over Milnerton's young U18 paddler, Marisa Pretorius and her clubmate, Women's Vet. paddler, Lisa Scott, despite an early hiccup at the first tree block, where she was forced to portage because of the chaos in it. Thereafter, in her own words, it was 'smooth sailing to the end - a very enjoyable race'. The Paarl Juniors continue to show their talents and in particular the two U16 paddlers, Luke Stowman and Michael Farringer, who were 1st and 2nd in the Junior category (excellent 11th and 14th overall placings respectively), whilst their clubmate, Joseph Williams, an U18 paddler (17th overall) was third. The depth in the Junior sections, in particular at the Paarl and Milnerton Clubs is really showing through with these first class results and are good news for the W.C.C.U. in general. Now the other clubs need to step up to the mark - which they are doing at Peninsula and the Maties, where junior programmes have also been established. The prize giving was held at the Gouda Hotel, reminding older paddlers of those halcyon days when after virtually every Berg River day race (and in particular the Gouda - Bridgetown and Hermon Gouda races) were celebrated at the wonderful 'watering hole' and the legendary 'Green Parrot Pub', the decorations of which have to be seen to believed and from which venue canoeing legends were born - just ask Paul Brouwer!). Next weeks Berg River day race, the 28 km section from Wellington (Lady Loch Bridge) to Hermon, will also double as the W.C.C.U. K1 River L/D championships, so a good turnout is expected and as rain is expected during the week, will help, as this section is notorious for its tree blocks. RESULTS. Senior Men 1. "/> Barry Lewin & Ant Stott ease out at Pirates at the Start of the 53rd CMH Toyota Pirates Umhlanga Pirates Race Report: CMH Toyota Pirates Umhlanga Pirates The CMH Toyota Pirates Umhlanga Pirates is without doubt one of the Toughest races on the Natal Calendar and 2010 did NOT let us down. A 15km/hr SW wind saw paddlers enjoy an easy 12.5km downwind to the Umhlanga lighthouse before turning into the wind for the 12.5km back to Pirates. From the 1st to the last paddler I could see it was a testing race. This race leaves paddlers with NO Illusions of their current fitness levels and is an Ideal training race for the Discovery Scottburgh to Brighton on 17 July. This years race saw a lot of paddlers team up in Double ski in preparation for the Scottburgh Brighton which has a Doubles focus this year. McGregor boasted another win at the popular CMH Toyota Pirates Umhlanga Pirates race which formed the eighth leg of the Discovery Sunglass Hut Surfski Series on Sunday in wet winter conditions. \n This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it
"/> The historic race, widely acknowledged as the oldest surf ski race in the world, was treated to an elite line up of paddlers who were met with miserably wet conditions at they headed out of Pirates beach with a full 24 km or 12 km short course ahead of them as they began their trek to Umhlanga and back. McGregor had a stellar race in flat'ish conditions and he eluded to the fact that he was using this race as part of his crucial training ahead of the Windhoek Berg Canoe Marathon set to take place from 14 to 17 July. "It was a fantastic day out," said McGregor. " It was great heading with the wind down to Umhlanga yet you can't forget that you have to turn back at some point and travel directly into the wind." The absence of both the current series leader Matt Bouman, who is still injured after dislocating his shoulder in a race two weeks ago, and U23 World Marathon Champ Grant van der Walt left the title up for taking. Series regulars Murray Smith and Wayne Wilson managed to take full advantage of the absentees creeping into a close second and third positions respectively. Both Smith and Wilson are Veteran paddlers The ace pair of Barry Lewin and Dusi legend Ant Stott claimed their third doubles title in the current series cementing their positions as favourites in the doubles race. Regulars on the podium Quinton Rutherford and Bryan Taylor followed in second and Mark Lewin and Mark Mulder taking home third. The ladies race was a titanic battle between rising stars Bob Operman and JoBurgs ANNA ARWIDI. Arwidi is busy builing her experience in the ocean and decided to come down to Durban at the last moment. In the end Arwidi triumphed in a winning time of 3:16:21 with Bob finishing in 3:23:21. These ladies showed true GRIT in very tough Paddling conditions. Michelle Eder opted to paddle in a double with Oliver Burn, in preparation for the Scottburgh to Brighton and they managed to scoop the title in the mixed doubles race. The pair were followed by Wayne Ashford and Shirley Delpech in second and Derek and Lynne Hauntfleisch in third. Regards, John Oliver --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NEIL POWELL relocates Some of you may have noticed that Neil Powell who was usually at every race, doing timekeeping and giving the paddlers a hard time about lack of proficiency, or registration, has been very scarce of late! Some months ago Neil advised GCU office that he was planning to relocate to Natal and although this was anticipated to take place at the end of July, the opportunity arose for Neil to depart at rather short notice during June. Neil is therefore no longer a Gautenger!!! Based in Natal, Neil will probably get involved with the KZN Canoe Union / work with John Oliver – who knows where the path will lead for his future in the canoeing world of South Africa. From Gauteng, I am sure you will all join us, the GCU office, in wishing him the very best for his future projects and plans, and thank him for the time and effort put in to canoeing during the past years which have been greatly appreciated despite his rather sticky run-ins with a number of paddlers who did not abide by the rules over the years! The duties that were managed by Neil have been redistributed rather hastily in various ways and a number of different persons are picking up the loose ends from race reportings, pre entries and timing at races etc although he is still managing the GCU website at this stage. While there may certainly be hiccups as new people scramble to fill the gaps left by Neil’s unexpectedly sudden departure, we are sure that we can count on Gautengers to provide assistance and support during the interim phase while procedures and responsibilities are re-allocated and be patient in the event of any delays or problems that may arise in the short term – confident in the knowledge that these rough patches will soon be smoothed out and run like the proverbial clock in due course!! In the meantime, should you have any queries or problems that you would normally refer to Neil, kindly contact Michelle in the GCU office at 011 888 7234 or in
