Graeme Pope-Ellis funeral and donations request.

The funeral of Graeme Poe-Ellis, the 15 times winner of the Dusi Canoe Marathon, will take place at the Hilton College Chapel on Friday 25 June at 2pm.

The Pope-Ellis family has requested that, in lieu of flowers, friends and well-wishers should make a donation to two causes that were very close to Graeme Pope-Ellis' heart, the Dusi uMngeni Conservancy Trust (DUCT), and the Change a Life Academy.

The Dusi uMngeni Conservancy Trust is doing pioneering work at rehabilitating damage caused to the river valley environment between Pietermaritzburg and Durban, while the Change a Life Academy provides practical support, lifeskills education and training to young aspirant canoeists from the Valley of a Thousand Hills.

Sun27 June: Race8: CMH Toyota Pirates Umhlanga Pirates - 12km or 27km
Last Short Course race for the 2010 Season

The oldest Long Distance Surfski Race on the Planet, and certainly one of the Toughest. The CMH Toyota Pirates Umhlanga Pirates will be staged for the 53 Time this Sunday! As per tradition the race will start at 1st light(7am) and will follow a course from Pirates LSC to the Umhlanga Lighthouse and back to Pirates.

HOT soup and Rolls will be served inside the Pirates LSC to all paddlers after the race. Not a normal sounding meal after a paddling race BUT it goes down a treat at this time of the year(Mid-Winter)

Sunday's weather is looking dodgy BUT Pirates LSC will be staging an alternative extreme weather course if it is not possible to stage the Pirates Umhlanga Pirates. People concerned about completing all races to claim their Sunglass Hut shades can rest assured that they can do the short Course if the Long course conditions cause them to be forced to opt out of the long course.

CMH Toyota have made up lekker kit as Prizes which always goes down well. Charlie Webber at CMH Toyota must be recognised for his continued support of the CMH Toyota Pirates Umhlanga Pirates. Tihs is the 9th year of their Sponsorship of this awesome event!

Entries open for Windhoek Berg River Canoe Marathon 2010

The country’s toughest canoe marathon has taken a bold step forward with the announcement that 2010 edition of the four day ultra-marathon from Paarl to the Cape West Coast will be known as the Windhoek Berg River Canoe Marathon.

Taking place the week after the FIFA World Cup Final, the Windhoek Berg River canoe marathon will once again pit the cream of the country’s marathon river racers against one another and the elements of the Cape winter over the 228km route to Velddrif from Wednesday 14 July to Saturday 17 July.

“The Windhoek Berg River Canoe Marathon is one of the hardest, and most grueling, canoe races of the year,” said Windhoek Marketing manager Mark von Bentheim. ““It takes dedication and staying true to what you believe in, in order to complete the race.”

“Above all, it is the absolute commitment and passion for the sport that has brought the Windhoek trademark together with the Berg River Canoe Marathon, to celebrate in the accomplishment, and commitment, that separates those that complete the Berg River from the fair weather paddlers,” von Bentheim added.

“It really is the ultimate challenge,” said defending champion Hank McGregor. “Every top paddler wants to win this race, and it is a serious test of stamina and endurance.”

“As a young boy growing up in the Cape I used to dream about one day taking part in the race, and having won it a number of times I cannot imagine a year without training for and competing in the Windhoek Berg,” he added.

Started in 1962, when 44 year old Nollie Meiring won the race from the small field of nineteen finishers, the tough four day canoe race is recognised for it’s extreme endurance demands, and the unique challenges from the Cape winter weather.

Its longest stage is the 75 kilometer third stage – the longest single days racing on the national canoeing calendar - the entire route is laced with testing tree blocks, swirling channels through the palmiet and long flat stretches tailor made for the cut-and-thrust of marathon racing.

The Windhoek Berg moved into a new era with the recent completion of the Berg river dam just above Paarl. This massive new structure brings with it the possibility of water releases that will ensure that the race will always be run on good water levels.

The recent innovations such as the three person relay format, and opening the race to surfskis and sit-on-top craft have also ensured that the race remains accessible and keeps pace with contemporary trends.

The Windhoek Berg River Canoe Marathon takes place for 14 to 17 July, and will be preceded by a time trials for 70 invited athletes on Tuesday 13 July. More information can be found at www.windhoekberg.co.za

SA Marathon sets the scene for Windhoek Berg Marathon

The SA Canoeing Marathon Champs at Keurbooms estuary near Plettenberg Bay this weekend, shook the apple tree to show who was going to be in the mix at the four day Windhoek Berg River Canoe Marathon in four weeks time.

Defending champion Hank McGregor made his intentions abundantly clear showing that he is back to his best form, winning two SA titles on the weekend in a classic raw power grind-out to the finish. He won both the singles and doubles gold medals, entrenching himself as the man to beat on the Berg in a months time.

The two days of racing in Plett has also shifted the spotlight to his younger friend Grant van der Walt, who was breathing down McGregor’s neck in the K1 race, and shared the K2 gold with McGregor the following day. An entry from Van der Walt would add an exciting new dimension to this year’s Windhoek Berg River Canoe Marathon.

McGregor, after a brief lowering of his profile is raring to defend his sixth Berg win, having equalled Robbie Herreveld’s record of race victories. He has confirmed that he is definitely going for a seventh title, and a new record of wins in this tough 228 kilometre long race.

McGregor noted that his preparations last year were far from ideal, having stepped off a plane from the Mauritius Surfski World Cup just in time to race the Windhoek Berg. This year, he said he has all the time he needs to prepare.

“I’m going to get down to the Cape with enough time to recce the river at levels approximating what we’ll have on the race” he added with a terse smile.

The response from one Cape elite racer was equally bullish. Lance King and new-found wave-companion Mark Holzhausen were only two minutes behind the McGregor in the K1 national title decider at Keurbooms.

23 year-old Lance King who has been training on the Windhoek Berg route daily, familiarising himself with every feature he can, has been growing in stature every year. “I know I’m timing things well this year, and I’m getting stronger while many of the older top guys’ performances have plateaux-ed”, he quipped.

Another key pointer from the weekend’s racing in Plettenberg Bay was the steady performance of Pierre-Andre Rabie and both Patrick and Andrew Birkett. The trio formed a threatening posse that raced for fifth position in the national title decider.

Windhoek Berg women’s champion Robyn Kime was one big name absent from the results from the Keurbooms Champs. However Abbey Adie’s was there to show the way to a small field of ladies K2’s in an intriguing pairing with Lindi-May Harmsen.

With Abbey Miedema now based in Canada and unlikely to put an appearance, does the gentle Kime have the dance floor to herself?

With dams of the Berg River System approaching 100% full, 44cumecs at Drieheuwels weir at time of writing, the chances of a “low” Berg have all but been eliminated.

The Windhoek Berg River Canoe Marathon takes place for 14 to 17 July, and will be preceded by a time trials for 70 invited athletes on Tuesday 13 July. More information can be found at www.windhoekberg.co.za

WHAT JUST HAPPENED

SLALOM - CYP AND MASTER IN EUROPE

Top C2 slalom paddlers Master Cele and Cyprian Ngidi have had a busy month and a half in Europe, taking part in three International Canoeing Federation (ICF) slalom races and the opening World Cup this last weekend. While both paddlers have the experience of the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing under their belts, they find local competition hard to come by in their hometown of Bethlehem, and thanks to funding from the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund are now able to travel on the tough European summer circuit against the best slalom protagonists in the world.

The first of the three ICF races was held in Tacen in Slovenia, and Cele and Ngidi immediately found the standard a notch up from their usual racing, making it through to the semi-final stage and no further. Still, considering this was their first international race in a C2 together, it was a solid showing that buoyed their spirits and laid a foundation that they could build off. At the Beijing Olympics, Ngidi partnered Cameron McIntosh in the C2, while Cele had competed in the K1 category in Beijing and in a C1 last year.

The second of the ICF races, in L'argentière la Bessé in France, saw a much improved performance from the pair as they made it all the way through to the Finals, where they finished in 8th position overall. The third and final ICF race also took place in France, in Bourg Saint Maurice, and again saw an improved performance, prompting coach Jean Jerome Perrin to label the pair’s semi-final “one of the best runs they have had in Europe.” It was good enough to get them through to the final, where they finished in a respectable 8th place amongst some world-class competitors.

The fourth race of the journey was the biggest - the first ICF Canoe Slalom World Cup held in Prague. Cele and Ngidi found the artificial slalom course would be their downfall once again. The pair are used to the natural flow of their home training course on the Ash River and battle on the rapids and eddies that artificial structures create. After being penalized 60 seconds, Cele and Ngidi placed 30th in their heat and failed to progress to the semi-final stage. Slovakian superstar brothers Peter and Pavel Hochschorner dominated the C2 heats and semi-finals, but surprisingly came undone in the final and placed second to the Chinese pair of Minghai Hu and Junrong Shu.

Perrin was forthright in his view of the South African’s showing in the first World Cup. “Master and Cyprian struggle to adapt their technique to the artificial course, and perform much better on natural courses such as their training grounds in Bethlehem.” Although Cele and Ngidi have worked hard to improve their performance on the artificial course in the last two months, Perrin says it is not yet enough.

The next two Slalom World Cups will be held in Spain from 25 to 27 June, and Germany from 2 to 4 July.

Kayak Finals at 2010 ICF Canoe Slalom World Cup, Prague

Sunday 20th June 2010

An exciting afternoon here in Prague produced surprises left right, and centre. A mother/son podium

appearance, as well as a Brit and a Swiss and an unfortunate episode of technical equipment failure.

Women's K1

Semi-Final

Slovakia's Jana Dukatova finished over 3 seconds clear of Oblinger-Peters. Third fastest time went

to Germany's Claudia Baer. Also to look out for in the final is World Champion, Jasmin Schornberg.

Clearly more relaxed than in the heats, her strong performance gave her the fifth fastest time.

Big surprise: Austria's Corinna Kuhnle performed convincingly in the heats. However, being the

last to run in this morning's semi-final perhaps laid the pressure on. Corinna hit the gate once, but it

was a slow time that knocked her out of this afternoon's final.

Final

All change for the finals.

1st place Jasmin Schornberg (GER) 109.05

2nd place Fiona Pennie (GBR) 109.16

3rd place Stepanka Hilgertova (CZE) 109.79

Big Surprise: Jana Dukatova's drama as the spray skirt came away from the boat, filling her boat

up with water and her of kilter. The race was over for her as soon as it started.

Quotes: Jasmin Schornberg “I'm very satisfied with my run, and I'm very happy to be the first after

the World Championships last year. So, I think everybody will know now that I can paddle and for

myself it's very good.”

Fiona Pennie, “I'm really pleased, obviosuly it would be nice to be .11 quicker then I would have

won. It was surprising watching the other girls come down afterwards, we thought it was going to

be really close and lots of improvements could be made in the second runs. There were some

mistakes made... there was that touch, a minor blip but I was pleased all in all.”

Men's K1

Semi-Final

John Hastings (CAN) made it through to the final, and he made it through with the fastest time of

the morning beating the likes of Peter Kauzer, Daniele Molmenti and Alexander Grimm. Alexander

Grimm (GER) winner of the heats finished with the second fastest time and Peter Kauzer (SLO)

finished third.

Big Surprise: More than a few will be surprised to hear that the fastest time of the Men's K1 semi

went to a Canadian, John Hastings.

Final

1st place Daniele Molmenti (ITA) 92.62

2nd place Lubos Hilgert (CZE) 94.02

3rd place Michael Kurt (SUI) 94.68

Big surprise: Switzerland, Michael Kurt was somewhat of a surprise bronze medallist. The first to

run, he had time to get out of the water and watch his competitors while his fate unfolded.

Quotes: Daniele Molmenti (ITA) “I was feeling very good today... I did a solid semi-final, I didn't

push really hard, I just wanted to do my job and it was good enough to get in the final. Then in the

final, I saw the first five athletes and I thought a good solid run without any risks would be enough.

I just made the same run as before and it was a really good time. It was really hard for the others to

beat me. I think the guys after me heard the time because if Kauzer made two touches it's because

he made risks. I think he heard my time and he tried to go over the limit.”

Lubos Hilgert (CZE) “I couldn't concentrate enough because of the fans half way down the course

but luckily I wasn't too nervous or stressed. So it was a nice clear run, nothing special but it was

enough for second place. The support from the crowd was fantastic, I was so happy they came and

supported me, it was a great atmosphere here.”

Michael Kurt (SUI) “The run was ok, it was not perfect but some parts were really good so I'm

happy at the moment. I just need to wait and see what happens.”

John Hastings (CAN) “It was fantastic, it was my first final ever. I finished seventh, I'm pleased

with that, it's all about gaining experience and if you don't get what you want, which is gold

obviously, you get the experience. We have two more World Cups left and one of my goals this year

was to get on the podium so hopefully I can use what I've learnt here and get there.” About coming

out top in the semi-final, he said, “It was brilliant, I was shocked. I'm sure I was as shocked as

everybody who saw my name at the top of the leader board.” When asked if he felt the pressure

building up while he waited for his final run, John said, “Surprisingly there was absolutely no

pressure on me. This was my first final, my expectations were just to go out there and paddle as

well as I could and I really didn't feel any pressure.”

JCC Long Klip

Long. Hard. Tough. Tricky. Cold. Exhausting.

These were some of the one word descriptions of the JCC Long Klip Race hosted from Pipes to Caravan Park, some 38km on Sunday 20 June 2010 – the day before the winter solstice – in what is probably the coldest week experienced in Gauteng for many years!

There were a few other adjectives which can’t be mentioned as they would bounce off your servers as unsuitable !

But the expletives were voiced with pride and triumph by those who finished the exhausting demanding challenge and some of the hardy paddlers enjoying the hard working challenge even called for a repeat event, desperate to find the kind of training one needs in order to improve the overall standards of the Gauteng paddlers, provide a good hard working training session, as well as toughening up the newer breed of canoeists!  Not to mention the training required for Berg paddlers which was the main reason the race was hosted at this stage of the year – being the perfect Berg conditions!

Certainly it was cold and frosty at below 0 degrees before the start but predictably by the time the paddlers hoisted boats into the water and sat in the their boats in the increasingly warm sun,  the paddle started off pleasantly although the water was certainly icy and those who were unfortunate enough to swim battled to warm up afterwards.  It is absolutely vital that paddlers wear the correct kit for winter paddling and the bare minimum should be a thermal and plastic coated chill cheater!

The new section of river recently opened up by Gavin Steyl and his crews of tree clearers was certainly technical and definitely challenging – paddlers had to be wide awake to find their way through the maze of sneaks and lurking saboteur logs  and the K2s had a really tough time trying to turn the tight  Z bends around the stumps of logs and dead trees, working muscles hard against the currents of the water, pulling on trees branches, humping over submerged logs and in a number of occasions finding themselves stuck in positions where the K2 couldn’t go backwards or forwards and sideways was not an option!  Sheer struggle and hard physical work was demanded and while the K1 boats found it less difficult, it was not less challenging.

While Steyl felt strongly that C grade paddlers should not attempt the race as experience in river reading as well as maneuvering through the challenging maze was essential, and there were not marshalls at every potentially dangerous obstacle of which there were many, a number of novice paddlers did take on the race looking earnestly for their points for Fish and not willing to be frightened off from challenges and distances, they certainly had a crash course in how to manage in tricky conditions and learnt an amazing amount – fortunately the river currents were slow and lazy and there was therefore little real danger to paddlers if they were sensible.  The few marshalls on duty (including offroad bikers) rushed from point to point to ensure that the low level bridges and pipe bridges were covered by watchful eyes and providing guidance for shooting and portaging. If not in time for the front top paddlers with plenty of experience and knowledge of the river, certainly they were there for the slower, less experienced learners which was much appreciated!  A few small weirs plus the Daleside dump into a deep hole brought forth a few gasps as icy water splashed paddlers, and a few portages finished the challenges of the top section (low level bridges and one tree block) and then the fun began from Andre’s farm onwards although for tired chilled paddlers the rapids and the “Crossing” of the stream at Henley Weir were an additional challenge!

An impressive number of 50 boats started the race considering it was Father’s day and mid winter – Dad’s pulled in some favours here!  with paddlers from as far afield as the Lowvelders who never shy away from a challenge although used to much warmer climes! There were some 10 odd boat withdrawals due to either boat damage, excessive cold after swimming or just exhaustion and too much challenge and sweeps called a cut off at Andre’s farm which was not quite halfway of 2.5 hours and the last finishers within the cut off time of the full distance finished in 4:51 while the winners time was 2:52!

The winner was Piers Cruickshanks (DAB) also first SV, with Gregory Smith (VIC) 2nd in 2:54 (Been practicing this stretch!), and Michael Mbanjwa in third (SOW) in 2:59:23, followed by Ryan Simonato (JCC) 4th 2:59:24, and Loveday Zondi (SOW) 3:04 in 5th – some recognizable high standard names from Gauteng!   The first Sub Master finisher was Gavin Steyl himself (JCC) who having put in the work to open the river up was not going to miss out on the fun of racing it especially since he knows where all the sneaks are and probably left a few in place to ensure a small advantage ! -  in 3:13 – 7th place, with Malcolm Stothard (DAB) finishing in 9th place as first Vet in 3:16, and Meyer Steyn (DAB) in 3:37 – 18th position as the first Master.

The first K2 finishers were Gavin Myburgh and Hardus Theunissen (FLO) in 19th and a time of 3:40 also Masters with John and Carrol Evans as next Masters finishing 20th in 3:41 as first Mixed Double in 3:41.  There weren’t a lot of mixed doubles as ladies being more sensible are obviously opting for the warmth of home comforts, however Nicolaas Roodt and Erika Taylor-Rabe (DAB) finished 25th in 3:53 and Dennis Carlse and Minnie Kretzschmar were the third  Mixed double finishing 41st in 4:33.

The only brave lady finisher was Erichia Nel from Lowveld finishing 40th in 4:27 – quite a temperature change from Lowveld to Gauteng mid winter and goodness knows what bribes and threats convinced her to participate!!  Well done lady – we salute you – from afar!!

The older generation of toughened hardy paddlers were once again very visible with age categories splattered throughout the results with more than half of the finishers being Vet and older age groups while Jan Leonard and Graham Forbes (WAT) finished as the only Sub Grand Masters in 30th position in 4:03 while Raymond Pratt (ERK) was the only Grand Master finisher in 33rd position, 4:09.

Once again juniors were in short supply in the cold of mid winter and in such a long tough event, and the only finisher was Danie Botes (CEN) finishing 38th in 4:25 as an Under 16.

The feastmakers who are connected to the Henley Scout group,  were back with delicious curry, devine home made hamburgers, egg and bacon rolls as well as hot chocolate and coffee on sale to reward the hungry tired paddlers and families which was greatly appreciated!

SWARTLAND MARATHON

In the spirit of the 2010 World Cup the Annual Swart Land Canoe Marathon was started with the blast of a vuvuzela as the clock struck 10 am on Saturday 19 June by the charismatic chairman of Peninsula Canoe Club , Mark Torrington,  who sent 120 paddlers awayt from the start of the 2010 Swartland Canoe Marathon under perfect racing conditions: a full Berg River, sunshine and no wind.

Some extra excitement had been thrown into the mix for the seeded paddlers when Peninsula Canoe Club’s Graeme Solomon, drained after  racing hard the previous weekend  at the SA Marathon Championships and a week trying to shake off a cold, arrived at the start at Skooltjie bridge to register as a last minute entry. Having registered too late for seeding, he was positioned in the last row of the seeded paddlers from where he put in a terrific charge to chase after the front seeded paddlers which included race favourite of the University of Stellenbosch.

Klei rapid proved to be a mix of adrenaline and swimmers, with some 40% of the field ending up giving the interior of their boats a good rinse here. Oblivious to the mayhem behind him, Graeme Solomon’s herculean efforts had paid off and he was now part of the leading break-away trio with Pierre-André Rabie and Peninsula Canoe Club’s very promising Alasdair Glass. Drama unfolded when the trio approached a tree-block unknown to these three. Solomon put in a burst to lead the group into the block, but then got stuck, showing the two others that it might be a better tactic to do a quick portage which allowed them to then slip past.

Pierre-André Rabie then sped off, dropping Alasdair Glass, who was later again caught by Solomon, who continued to  put in another powerful chase to close the 1 minute and 10 second gap Rabie had opened up.

Some 6k later Solomon, having dropped Glass in the hard grind, caught Rabie and these two raced together until a tree-block about 5km before Hermon. Solomon was first to the block, hopped out his boat and was doing a seal launch off the tree, when his paddle was inadvertently caught under the front of Rabies’ boat and resulted in a swim, allowing a clean run home for Day 1 Winner Pierre-André Rabie.

Day 2 of the 2010 Swartland Canoe Marathon began with a misty start at Zonquasdrift, and Alasdair Glass soon found that it was his turn to encounter problems in negotiating a tree block and this effectively put paid to his hopes for a finish on the podium.

The terrific tussle at the front continued between Rabie and Solomon, and the two were racing together just after Ysterpen rapid until a well known tree-block. Solomon tried to go through the centre of it, only to get into serious trouble which very nearly destroyed his boat, while Rabie slipped through on the left to gain an unassailable 5 minute lead to assure his position as the overall winner of the 2010 Swartland Canoe Marathon.

Unknown Double SKi Blasts out at the Island Tribe Scottburgh Surf Classic

Race Report - Island Tribe Scottburgh Surf Classic

McGregor back on top in Scottburgh surfski thriller

Durban -  Ace paddler Hank McGregor claimed the Island Tribe Scottburgh Surf Classic which formed the seventh leg in the Discovery Sunglass Hut Surfski Series in ideal conditions.

McGregor took full advantage of the absence of series leader Matt Bouman who was at home in bed resting after dislocating his shoulder in last weeks race. "I will be out of action for a further week or so but it won't take me long to get back into the water," said Bouman.

McGregor stole the show taking by taking the lead early on in the race and eventual took the title a full minute and a half ahead of U23 World Marathon champ Grant van der Walt, with series regulars Tom Schilperoort and Marc Holtzhausen in third and fourth consecutively.

In the ladies race the absence of regular Donna Winter left the field open for the Toti starlet Michelle Eder who clocked up yet another win in the 2010 winter series. "It was another great day of racing with fantastic conditions," sad Eder. "Although I have to say I did have two swims at Scottburgh."

"The conditions weren't hectic," said Eder. "The backline was clean, but there were a few waves that came out of no where and a few of us went down." Toti youngster Jenna Ward leapt into second in the lades race and Maya Opperman took home third position.

The on-form crew of Barry Lewin and Ant Stott took the doubles title, followed by Quinton Rutherford and Bryan Taylor in a close second. Grant Harper won the 7km short course race and in the same category Chris Murray and Malcolm Pitt took home second and third respectfully.

Competitors raced the "T" shaped course in clear Winter conditions and had the option of a seven kilometre short course or the long course of 15 kilometres forming two laps of the same course. Paddlers started at Scottburgh and were directed out a kilometre then South to a turning can before returning back to a Scottburgh beach around a can on the beach then out again heading North and finishing back on Scottburgh main beach.

GENERAL NEWS

Surfski.info is back!

The site had become so slooooow, it was barely usable...  But however, we've revamped the site - fed it some high octane fuel, and it's now as fast as... well, it's a delight to use (in my biased opinion!).

We've lost the comments (but I can extract them if requested) and some of the links to photos have gone - and will be put back over the coming weeks.  But the forum is intact and the speed more than makes up for the inconveniences.

New content:

One of the things we've got right is the calendar module - we've got most of the important international surfski races up - and best of all, the module allows you to add your own events to the calendar.

We've got some great pics up in the report on today's Discovery Sunglass Spot race in Durban (won by South African ace Hank McGregor), along with the article on the Positive Caster Rudder - which is arousing a lot of interest and might just change the way rudders are fitted to surfskis in the future.

Lots of stuff coming up too - we've been paddling the new Kayak Centre EOS 660 single ski and the review will be up soon - suffice to say that in our opinion it's a fast ski, but not for beginners... much more detail coming soon.

Race announcements coming up - the Mauritius Ocean Classic will be held from 6 to 11 September and the dates for the Southern Shamaal PE2EL Challenge have been confirmed - 9-12 December...

So - come check out the new site.  I'm not quite happy with the layout - but I'm blown away by the speed.  All comments and suggestions more than welcome!

Repairs and surfacing of dirt road to NCC clubhouse at Campsdrift

To: All Canoeing Stakeholders

All persons who have driven along the dirt road to the NCC clubhouse during the rainy season know the torrid conditions through which vehicles have to navigate.

Quite frankly, it is a complete nightmare at times with mud, potholes and slush causing not only a hazardous experience, but also contributing to vehicles becoming unnecessarily soiled.

Last year we managed to source a few truck loads of recycled road tar and reinstated the parking areas immediate outside the club house with a compressed tar hard top. I am sure that all will agree that this has resulted in a much improved parking facility with little muddy mess during rainy times.

Recently, Bruno Cullen managed to again source a far larger quantity of recycled tar and persuaded the contractor to drop the tar stone along the length of the access road. The intent now is to continue the ‘tar hard top’ all around the clubhouse and also alone the entire dirt road that joins onto College road.

After being turned down by the PMB municipality (lack of funds), I approached Sandy Davidson and he kindly agreed to carry out this civil works at less than cost and agreed to a sum of R18 000-00. Considering the magnitude of the task and the benefits to be derived, this proposition is an absolute bargain and we have instructed Sandy to proceed as soon as convenient to himself.

Natal Canoe Club will obviously pay Sandy after completion. Natal Canoe Club is however not flush with cash and hence I am appealing to all canoeing stakeholders (paddlers, local canoe clubs, administrators, local authorities and any other interested party) who value this project to make a cash contribution of any amount.

As a gesture of goodwill and commitment to this cause, I am making a personal donation of R1000, so now we only need a further R17 000-00.

Anybody interested in making a donation to please contact Mary Millward on 033 3421528 and  I appeal to you to pass on this request to other people who you think may be interested in making a contribution.

Thank you for your interest.

Best regards
