DOWNLOAD FULL RESULTS HERE On Sunday 30th May, 2010, the W.C.C.U. K2 canoe marathon championships (postponed due to poor weather earlier in the month) were held at the stunningly beautiful Arrieskraal Dam, on the Palmiet River, Elgin Valley, and although (unfortunately) the turn-out was not as good as would have been liked, the venue and outstanding weather made for a wonderful event, with W.C.C.U. looking perhaps to making this the permanent venue for both K1 and K2 canoe marathon events in the future. For the unitiated, even though there was a very strong south easterly wind blowing in the region of Sir Lowry’s Pass on the way to the dam from Cape Town, on arrival the water was like a mirror and although a breeze did come through during the racing, it was insignificant.
The main event of the day, the Senior Men’s (Open) – 7 laps of 4.3 kms, was not without its drama, when, just after the briefing, the favourites for the event, Lance King (Milnerton) and Sean Rice (Peninsula), found that King’s seat in their K2 had broken due to vibrations on the drive out from Cape Town. With the officials unaware of this, the race was started without them, they desperately trying to fix it, and then only getting onto the water approx. 2 minutes after the start. However, by the end of the 4th lap, that had caught the other senior men’s ‘flyers’, Patrick and Andrew Birkett (Pen/UCT) and Ernest van Riet/Heinrich Schloms (Maties/Paarl), this despite the Birkett brothers getting an 80 m lead on the chasing boats early on in the 4th lap. However, coming into the start of their 5th lap, these 3 canoes were racing side-by-side and so it would continue to the final end sprint, where King/Rice took 1st place, van Riet/Schloms 2nd on their slip and the Birkett’s, also on slip, in 3rd. Other categories, from Senior Women through Juniors through to Grandmasters, were also raced, although their racing distances were less than that for the Senior Men.Senior (Open) Men. 1.
