STATEMENT BY THE PRESIDENT

The Appeal Committee have now released their reason`s for reducing Hank McGregor`s sentence which are briefly as follows;

They believed that Hank was genuinely remorseful about what he had done.

Hank pleaded guilty to the charge, never disputed the facts and in evidence before the committee, repeated his remorse,

There was a measure of provocation which does not justify the assault, but is a mitigating factor.

Jacques suffered no injuries as a result of the assault which consisted of a number of wild punches which either struck Jacques` helmet or life jacket.

Hank has a clean disciplinary record and he is dealt with as a first offender.

On the other hand, Hank is an icon and should be setting an example to others.  His actions while competing should be beyond reproach.

The reason why the Appeal Committee differed from the disciplinary committee was the amount of money that Hank would lose for being out of the sport.  If his suspension of 6 months was upheld, he would have lost an income of between R100,000 to R150,000. A suspension for a 2 month period would have been equal to a loss of up to R37,000.

The Appeal Committee found that had Hank been charged with assault in the Magistrates Court, he would have received a fine of a few hundred rand or even a caution and a discharge.

For the reasons as set out above, the Appeal Committee handed down a penalty of 2 months suspension.

Those then are the reasons as handed down by the Appeal Committee.  What many of our canoeists still however do not seem to understand, is that once the Appeal Committee had been appointed, the CSA Board`s powers came to an end.  The Appeal Committee is an independent body who hears the evidence and then comes to a decision.  Neither the CSA Board nor any other person or body of persons can dictate to this Committee what they should decide and for what reasons.  Their decision has now been made and the matter is final.

Dope Hearing:

The 2nd day of the dope hearing came to an end on Monday, 10th May 2010.  Due to certain new evidence being led by the Athlete, CSA have reserved the right to recall any experts should they deem it necessary to do so.  This will be done by the end of this week.  Should CSA not exercise their right to recall experts, both parties will lodge their arguments and the disciplinary committee will come to a decision.

In the event that the disciplinary committee hands out a ruling which falls out of the Anti-doping rules guidelines without substantive reasons, then the South African Institute of Drug Free Sport, The World Anti Doping Association or the International Canoeing Federation may appeal this decision to the Court of Arbitration in Sport based in Lausanne.  They then will hear the matter and either confirm or amend the disciplinary Committees decision.  In the meantime, the canoeist remains banned from taking part in any race until this matter has been finalized.

If I seem to harp too much on the abovementioned two unpleasant matters, it is due to the many e-mails that I receive from members accusing the CSA Board of condoning Hank`s behaviour or of sweeping the drug issue “under the carpet.”  Please be assured that neither accusation is true and the Board are taking all the steps that they are empowered to take to protect the interests of their canoeists.

MCcarthy Toyota King of the Bay

Race4: Sun 23 May, McCarth Toyota King of the Bay. 10km or 22km

No RACE on Comrades Marathon weekend

Watching the finish of last Sunday's Dunlop Surfski World cup is a memory that will stay with me forever. Dawid and Matt both in with a chance of a win right down to the line. Their relative chances of winning changed hands about 5 times in the last 3 minutes of the race. Neither gave an inch and both looked like they could take it.

After 33km's of racing just 0.26 of a second seperated 1st from second. To Dawid and Matt I say congratulations on an amazing moment in sport. Nikki Mocke and Michele Eray also had a titanic battle, with Michele Eray leading most of the way. Nikki then took her own deeper line and secured a comfortable win. Talking with lots of people, it seems NIkki took the ultimate line. Shallow till 15km then slightly deeper for the last 15km. What is clear is that Nikki and Michele will be locking horns again!

Moving swiftly along, we have another amazing Discovery Sunglass HUt Series race coming up this Sunday. Stella Canoe Club's Mcarthy Toyota King of the Bay. As you all know it is illegal to paddle out the Harbour Mouth so this is a once a year opportunity to do so. Neels Meyer arranges with the Harbour Authorities for us to race from the Stella Canoe Club on the Silt Canal, directly through the Durban Harbour and out the Mouth into the sea!

The Short course cut hard left for DUC to complete 10km of paddling, whilst the Long Course head North for a Turn Can off the Hyper by the sea. AT Hyper by the Sea, they turn and head for the finish at DUC. A total distance of 22km.

PAARL - SKOOLTJIE

On Saturday, 22nd May and starting at 10h00 at the Paarl Canoe Club, the very first of the 2010 canoeing season Presidents’ Trophy canoe races will take place on the Berg River, starting from the stretch of water in front of the Paarl Canoe Club and ending 23 kms later, at the low-level bridge at Skooltjie.

The good rains last week have raised the water levels considerably – as was experienced on the race last Saturday, in the same area – however, they will have subsided somewhat since last week, which will slow the field down as well as present a number of obstacles that previously canoeists were simply able to paddle over.

Obstacles to be cognisant of on this race are the Dal Josephat weir and rapid under the Dal Josephat bridge, approx 3 km from the start, the many and varied channels all the way down this section of river with the overhanging branches on corners being something to look out for, the rapid on river left about a kilometre down from the Lady Loch bridge (Wellington) and then the iron plates at the old bridge/drift, about 1.5 km from Skooltjie – i.e., a relatively obstacle-free section of river that should be conducive to good racing, by elite’, middle-of-the-field and novice paddlers alike.

The current – ‘top guns’ of the canoeing scene are Lance King (Milnerton), who is in excellent form at the moment with the legend, Graeme Solomon (Peninsula), right on his slip as well as Ernest van Riet (Maties), Heinrich Schloms (Paarl), P-W Basson (Paarl), Pierre-Andre Rabie (Maties), Patrick Birkett (Peninsula) and Lance Kime (Maties) amongst others, as it is well known that one slip on a river race, can very easily change the order of things.

Amongst the women paddlers, Robyn Kime (Maties) seems to be well ahead of the field, especially as rivers are ‘her thing’, but if the likes of Jackie Barnes (UCT) can find space to race during exams, Milnerton’s Bianca Beavitt ditto and Peninsula’s Jemma Hofmeyer can each have an error free race on Saturday, then they will all be looking at podium places.

The W.C.C.U. K2 canoe marathon championships

Postponed on 2nd  May (on Misverstand Dam, because of extremely bad weather) to Sunday 23rd May on Zandvlei/Marina da Gama, are currently in jeopardy.

Although scheduled to start from 09h30 (Sub Junior categories), the massive weed problem in Zandvlei and in the Marina da Gama canals, as a failure by the CTCC to get their house in order w.r.t. harvesting weed on these waters, has forced Peninsula Canoe Club (as hosts) to inform W.C.C.U. that such an event will be impossible to be held there this weekend. There is simply not being enough water available to fit in the required 4.3 km course that needs to be paddled.

At the time of writing, the CTCC are not replying to calls/sms’s/emails from Peninsula, nor the WCCU, so it is a case of ‘wait-and-see’ but the chances of Zandvlei/Marina canals being ready by Sunday is nigh impossible..

The change of venue for this Sunday’s annual W.C.C.U. K2 canoe marathon championships will be communicated to all paddlers via SMS and will also be put up on the W.C.C.U. website.

 KZN MARATHON TRIALS – CHAMPIONSHIPS

The option of holding the K1 and K2 trials back to back on 29th and 30th May has presented a new problem. 30th is Comrades Day and apart from some people involved in the trials perhaps wanting to watch the Comrades, it also means that the road to Nagle Dam via Cato Ridge will be closed off for most of the early part of the day as it is part of the Comrades route.

So:

KZN K1 Marathon Trial 09h00 Sat 29th May at Nagle Dam.

KZN K2 Marathon Trial 09h00 Sat 5th June at Nagle Dam

Course is multiple 4.3km laps with 100m portages at the end of each lap. Senior Men 7laps, Senior Women 6 laps, U18&U16Boys, (SV, V, SM, SGM Men) 5 laps, U14 Boy, U18and U16 Girls, GM and older men, all Women’s Master classes 4 laps, U14 Girls 3 laps and Guppys 3000m.

Entry on the day from 08h00. Entry Fee R0.00 but you will have to pay the dam entry fee.

Those who do the trial will be eligible for selection to the KZN team to the SA Champs in Plet in June. If chosen they will receive a team racing vest or long sleeve top, a boat sticker, a travel subsidy and free entry to the SA Champs. Those who do not take part in the trial will not receive any of these things.

CHAMPS

After much discussion and the taking into account the very poor turnout last year it has been decided to move the KZN Flat Water Marathon Championships back to existing events. The Lance Park Memorial hosted by NCC in PMBurg 26th August will be KZN K1 and the Duncan Scotney Stella Nite Race in Durban 7th September will be KZN K2.

WHAT JUST HAPPENED

GA

FLCC BOND CHOICE RACE

The FLCC Bond Choice first race of the series took place on Sunday 16 May 2010 in glorious weather for mid May providing a superb racing day for the 80 boats that participated, mostly doubles on this K2 event.  The series of races that makes up the Bond Choice Challenge consists of 5 races where winners of the end prizes at the final lucky draw which include a number of boats  including and superb prizes would need to complete 3 of the 5 races, two of which ARE compulsory and there are NO exceptions to the rules.  Prizes are provided from Canoe Concepts, Erics Canoes and Thule and there are also draws at the end of each race for the participants to enjoy.

The best prize of all on this particular race and once that was enthusiastically appreciated by the race field was the fact that the bottom section of the river from Train Bridge to the Vaal River was completely open with no portages at all – for everyone who participated in the race it appears to have been the first time that this section of river has ever been completely paddled without the Indian Farm AND  K19 weir portages!

While the river was at a very forgiving level with comfortable water cushions over rocks on all the lines including graveyard, there were nevertheless a couple of withdrawals due to extensive boat damage namely at Sportsground rapid and at Black Rock just before Dave’s farm, however the marjority of the field thrived on the bouncy wavy rock free rapids.

A number of the stronger regular river racing paddlers were not present at the race, having either gone off to the Surfski champs in Natal or concentrating on flat water for marathon championships coming up shortly, which left the race open to new winners and there were also a number of interesting partnerships on this K2 challenge.

The race began at Meyerton’s Sportsground rapid and finished just before the Vaal River confluence in Three Rivers, a stretch of 22kms, clear paddling all the way through with one exception only being Train Bridge Weir.

The winners of this K2 event were Nkosi Mzolo and Tom Ngcobo (Sow/Likkewaan) in 1:24:49 which is another feather in the cap for the development programs throughout South Africa, followed by Under 18 junior paddlers Dugan Afonso and Siseko Ntondini (Dab/Sow) in 1:25.37.  Centurion paddlers Raymond Rorich and Adolf Joubert finished third in 1:27 with Loveday Zondi and partner Andre Bezuidenhout finishing in 4th position 1:28 (SOW/FLCC) while Ian Walker and Gary-Jon Brown from JCC finished in fifth place in 1:28.

The sixth boat to finish brought in the first K1 winner from ERK in 1:29, David Gerber followed by Gregory Smith also  in K1 2nd position with a second between them.  The 8th position was interestingly Michael Mbanjwa paddling with Kevin Holmes (SOW/DABS) finishing in 1:30 as the sixth K2.

The next category finishing in the race was the Sub Vets won by Andre le Roux and Leslie van Zyl Smith from Centurion in 1:34, and kevin Hutton with Raymond Pratt from ERK won the Sub Master category in 1:36 while the first Under 14 team finished in an impressive 22 nd position – two small young development paddlers – Archie Moncho (FLCC) and Colin Ledwaba (VIC) in 1:39.

The first Masters were Mark Hall and Keith Beeston (JCC) 1:40 while the first Sub Grand Masters were Andre van der Merwe and Anthony Phelp (JCC) 1:40:30.

The winning Mixed Doubles pair were Dabs partnership Barry Baragwanath and Claire Prahm in 1:40:53, and the first ladies team were also the first Under 16’s Morgan Ziervogel and Holly Spencer (JCC/DAB) in 1:43, while the second ladies combination were also winners of the Sub Master category being the first K2 in that age group – Elize Maree and Marike Ubbink from Centurion in 1:44 . The third lady finisher was Mariette Zandbergh from Watuni in a K1 finishing in 2:09 – well done ladies!

The first K2 Vet team was Sean Boyley and Jan Vos from Sasol (Secunda) in 1:53 while Franz Fischer (JCC)  was the only Grand master to compete finishing in 68th position in 2:11 (23rd K1).

As usual a high number of river safety marshalls from FLCC were in positions where major obstacles were  - thanks no doubt in part to the delicious free prego’s provided by the race organizers and cooks !  and they took their responsibilities seriously as can be seen by the near disqualification of a careless paddler by an irate marshall which prompts us to remind paddlers that marshalls have instructions regarding portages, put ins, take outs, based on the safety of the entire field,   and the race participants are required to adhere to the marshalls requests at all times as part of the race entry rules.

Bertie Baard takes great pride in organizing the series of races on behalf of FLCC and their sponsors Bond Choice as well as prize donors Canoe Concepts, Thule and Erics Canoes and together with an awesome team of helpers everybody had the opportunity to enjoy a  great safe fun race where even the weather and the water levels co-operated!

DAL JOSEPHAT to LADY LOCH

After a week of heavy downpours, which raised rivers levels in the province to high levels and had the highways and by-ways of the Cape a-buzz with motor vehicles carrying the short, plastic play-boats of the white water kayaking community as they went looking for good water  - and there was plenty of it, in just about any ‘sloot’ that was around - there was an air of anticipation over the scheduled canoe race on the Berg River for Saturday 15th, as it was to be a Novices event and the last thing that the WCCU Exco. wanted was a river in full flood carrying a group of beginner canoeists along its foamy path.

The section chosen, between the Dal Josephat Bridge in Paarl and the Lady Loch Bridge just outside Wellington, is an 18 km section that is most often used by canoeing coaches and instructors to introduce beginners to the sport of river paddling as it has on it many of the obstacles that one comes across on a WCCU President’s Trophy race – a small weir or two; some small rapids; some big left and right hand bends with accompanying overhanging branches; fast flowing water; swirlies; friendly and not so friendly ‘V’s; ‘S’ bends and of course, a bit of distance to get beginners to start to get the feel of being on a flowing river for more than an hour of paddling.

Fortunately for the organizers, the river level had dropped somewhat by the time the race was due to start, but it was still flowing very fast and in many places, had burst its banks. This was borne out by the fact that a new record was set for this section – Rob Hart, a Sub Master from Peninsula Canoe Club, covered the section in 44 minutes 31 seconds, to eclipse Lance King’s mark, but being an experienced paddler, Rob wasn’t the winner of the race, because that went to the first novice home to Lady Loch Bridge. This also would have one realise that the rains came early w.r.t. to this race this year as it is normally raced off at a low level – a level considered much more ideal for novices that what was served up on Saturday!

Notwithstanding the higher-than-normal levels, the race was still held and almost all who entered – and it posted a very good entry number of some 147 paddlers – completed it without too much difficulty. Sure, there were plenty of swimmers and not all novices either! (no names or pack drill to avoid embarrassment – you know who you are! – but good for novices to see that more experienced paddler do still take the off swim from time-to-timer such is the nature of canoe racing on rivers), but with the surfeit of experienced paddlers who made themselves available to ‘sweep’ the field (many thanks to all of you for doing such a wonderful and necessary job), no serious situations occurred and anyway, even if one stays upright in one’s canoe for the entire race, one is still just as wet on reaching the end as those who may have taken a swim (or two!).

So, all in all, an excellent day of novice racing, on a river of classic proportions, on a day that only Bolanders’ and Western Cape river paddlers can really appreciate and one which will hopefully persuade those many beginners who took part in it to continue with this awesome recreation.

Results:

1st novice lady    Shannon MacLean

2nd novice lady   Suzanne Malan

3rd novice lady    Desiree van Riet

1st novice man    Michael Pretorius

2nd novice man   Jaco Schoeman

3rd novice man    Marc Baleta

(These stand to be corrected, for, as anyone will know, trying to sort out novices from not-so-novices in the short time available between the end of the race and the prize-giving, is challenging. Once President’s Trophy races begin (from next week), with up-to-date data for all the age-group categories, more detailed and correct results will follow).

Many excellent photos were taken of the race by professional photographer, John Hishin, of Drumbeat Photography – go to his website and check them out.

Winklespruit - Reigning World champion Dawid Mockè satisfied a lifelong dream by finally winning the Dunlop Surfski World Cup Durban in a thrilling duel with Durban surf lifesaving Iron man Matt Bouman that was eventually decided in a neck-and-neck sprint up the beach to the finish at Winklespruit.

Mockè had the slimmest of leads going into the finish and opted to approach the crunching surf at Winkelspruit cautiously, taking a perpendicular line to the beach. Bouman saw his chance and took it, racing through the surf at an oblique angle and reaching the beach before Mockè, but with 50 metres to run along the beach to the finish line.

Mockè held his nerve and raced through the surf as Bouman was running towards the line, and despite a small stumble as he exited the water, he ran across the line, thrusting the nose of his ski ten centimetres ahead of the charging Bouman's craft.

"That was the ultimate sporting contest!" said an elated Mockè at the finish. "In all my years I have never ever had to work so hard to win a race. Matt (Bouman) was simply incredible, and this race is as much his as it is mine."

"Every time I made a break and I thought I had dropped him, he just came bouncing back, like some kind of Elastic Man! He just does not know the meaning of the word 'quit'," said Mockè.

A visibly gutted Bouman sank to the sand at the finish as he digested the narrowest of defeats. "Maybe it was just a bit too far for me today. I took my chances, but I was beaten by a brilliant athlete," said Bouman. "I don't care about the money, I just want to win this title."

In third place Dawid Mockè's younger brother Jasper underscored his pedigree by powering onto the podium, past a spent Hank McGregor in the closing stages of the race.

McGregor looked to be dominating the race early on, putting pressure on Mockè and Bouman as the race wound towards Isipingo. However shortly after he opted for a deeper line he blew, and looking like a paddler stuck on a treadmill, Mockè and Bouman quickly dropped him, leaving McGregor locked in a dogfight for third on an inside line with Jasper Mockè.

"It doesn't matter," said McGregor, who completed a two month Canoeing SA suspension the day before the big race. "Actually it just felt great to be back in the loop again."

To complete the celebrations in the Mockè household Nikki Mocke came storming through in the second half of the women's race to dethrone Michèle Eray, after the duo had been locked together at the halfway point of the 32km race.

"I was feeling really uncomfortable following Michèle on her inside line close to the backline," said Nikki Mockè. "Eventually I decided to follow my instincts and went much further out to sea where I felt a lot more comfortable."

"To be honest I couldn't see where Michèle was, and I did not actually know if I was in the lead when I came into the finish at Winkle," she added.

Toti local Michelle Eder finished third ahead of Donna Winter and Dene Simpson, a Durban expat now living and racing for New Zealand.

The on-form duo of Warren Jacobs and Jeffrey Smith took the double ski title in a fast time of 2 hours 12 minutes, edging out the Durban series regular pacesetters Herman Chalupsky and Andre Pohl, while Andre Woods and Helen Weldrick took the mixed doubles title.

The event broke the world record entry for an international race, with 296 paddlers taking part in the race from DUC to Winklespruit beach, raising the bar or the fledgling International Surfski Riders Association (ISPA) World Series tour.

Hi Guys

I'm moving into a new place and don't have place for all my boats.

I've decided to let the following two go, if you take both it's for free. Its a white water racing board (Savage) and a K1 (Kestrel). The latter might need some attention since it is leaking a little bit.

I can forward pictures if needed.

Let me know if you are interested, I'm located in the east of Pretoria.
