Hi-jacking at Marina da Gama, Rob MacLean, 06h20, Tuesday 27th April, 2010 PDF Print E-mail

My daughter and I were hi-jacked at gun-point this morning at 06h20 in our drive-way in Marina da Gama.

We were on our way to the Nekkies-Alvisdrift section of the Breede River where I was due to run a River Proficiency for a number of novice paddlers.

Fortunately, neither Shannon (my daughter) nor I are physically hurt but I am very, very angry about it.

The vehicle (my wife's Toyota Condor) was fitted with a Tracker Retriever system and so the vehicle was found within 2 hours of the hi-jacking.

Unfortunately, my two canoes (see photos attached - a Comet - the bronze coloured one and a Cleaver X - with a lavender coloured top deck/clear glass, nylon hull) and ) have not been recovered.

Both are as they can be seen in the photos - both have my national paddling number on - 5174 - whilst the Comet has a sponsored decal on either side on the front of the cockpit - MCC in black and yellow (stands for Mutual Construction Company, not Milnerton CC!) - as well as on the back deck immediately behind the cockpit. The Cleaver X has Fish River stickers on the front and behind cockpit on the back deck rob

2 x paddles were also stolen - the one being that which features on 'Original" photo (it is a SET paddle). The 2nd paddle was made by Simon van Gysin 3 - 4 years ago and has a black shaft with silver blades. Each blade has a large New Balance sticker on it as well as small MCC stickers black and yellow.

Also stolen and as yet, un-recovered were 2 x PFD's - one a brand-new Mocke (Red/Black) and one, an older one manufactured by 'X-Treme', in turquoise blue and is a river guide PFD, so has extra features on it like a pouch on the back, side pocket for a cow-tail (although the cow tail has been removed) and very distinctively, it has been repaired along the bottom with red Ventex type material.

Also - a Rapid Sports camel back, 4 x splashcovers (3 are Trippers - mainly black and blue in colour, 1 X plain turquoise blue-green), FENN Cape Point Challenge 2009 paddling shorts, 2 x Hely Hansen type L/S paddling tops - one in PCC colours, one in blue and a pair of Vibram 5 Finger paddling shoes.

These were all in a yellow 'bucket' made from a 2 litre plastic container.

Other things like cell phones, wallets, a Canon digital camera were also stolen, but I would be very grateful if a look-out was kept by all WCCU paddlers for the above described paddling gear, paddles and canoes.

Many thanks.
