BIG FISH CALLED OFF

DWAF has informed us that we can not get the 50cumecs for the BIG Fish.  It is quite a let down, because sponsors have already made payments and everything are in place for the race.  We tried to get high flow from the tunnel to Grassridge but due to the low releases from Grassridge the dam is exceeding the save operating level.  So, DWAF is only releasing the minimum flow from the tunnel and from Grassridge at the moment.

The club had a crisis meeting last night and it was decided to scrap the race this year.  It will be detrimental to the race to try and stage the event on flow lower than the normal Fish.  Can you please inform all paddlers.  We have received quite a number of entries already and we will return the entry fees paid to those paddlers.  We have rally tried all options to still stage the event, but unfortunately DWAF could not wait with the emergency maintenance on Elandsdrift.

The club therefore urge paddlers to support the Orange River Marathon!

It has been decided last night that a date for next year will be finalized within the next month and it will be communicated to all organizations to prevent clashes with other events.  It will most probably be held in March 2011, depending on approval from the various new sponsors who came on board this year.

Thank you for getting the word out.  We are very sorry about this because the BIG Fish is more an adventure as a race and the focus is on clean fun in the river, but DWAF had to conduct the urgent maintenance.  DWAF is always very supportive and assist us always where they can and the club therefore understand the position they are in and know that if it could have been done on another time they really would have done it later.

Regards,

Philip de Wet (Pr. Eng. Pr. CPM, MBA (Stell))

Hey John

After Closing the Entry for the 2010 Dunlop Surfski World cup last Friday, I am pleased to let you know that the entry has been good(180 Boats). Please read a little later about a race entry extension brought about by a technical glitch on the race entry website, www.roag.co.za

I had quite a few people asking why I closed Entry so long before the Dunlop Surfski World Cup on 16 May. Here is my reasoning. This year the Durban Calendar of events has experienced forced changes due to the Durban City Council and FIFA placing a ban on any, and all, events taking place in Durban between 6 June and 13 July. Even the Vodacom July Handicap has had to move from it's traditional event date(1st Sat in July). In case you want to go to the Jukly Handicap, the new date is 31 July.

Back to the Discovery Sunglass Hut series calendar. Because the Dunlop Surfski world Cup is based in Durban, I had to select a date well clear of the limitations imposed by FIFA and for a number of reasons we settled on Sunday 16 May. This date is a full 7 weeks earlier than the normal race date(2nd Sat in July).

Remembering that the Dunlop Surfski World Cup is a 32km race, I felt I needed to get commitment to the event early and hopefully shake you into the reality that the WC race is ONLY 4 weeks away. Again, this is a 32km race IE you need to prepare/train for a longer race. To SMASH the point home, I have listed the finishing times from last year(Winner overall & winner of each grade). Half the field took longer than 2.5hrs to complete the course!

Finishing Times from the 2009 Dunlop Surfski World Cup
1st overall: Clint Pretorius (1hr55min)
1st B-Grade Oliver Burn (89.36%) (2hr8min)
1st C-Grade Steve Cohen (79.29%) (2hr20min)
1st D-Grade Thomas Pryor (69.88%) (2hr30min)
1st E-Grade Brian Kernick (59.74%) (2hr42min)

WHAT JUST HAPPENED

SA SPRINTS

Nagle Dam – SA Sprint canoeists enjoyed a weekend of fierce competition at the SA Sprint Kayaking Championships held at Nagle dam outside Pietermaritzburg. The SA Champs, which doubled as the selection trials for the team to compete internationally at the Sprint World Cups, gave a clear indication that the level of SA Sprinting is on the rise, and with only a year to go until the trials for the 2012 London Olympic games, this is exactly what CSA and SASCOC hoped to see.

In some of the hottest competition ever seen at an SA Champs, it was the standout performances and consistency shown by Bridgitte Hartley and Shaun Rubenstein that saw them claim the much coveted Victrix and Victor Ludorum titles. While many athletes chose to focus mainly on their speciality events, Hartley competed in all of the events on offer saying “ Although the K1 500m is the event the most important for me in order to secure my spot in the World cup team for this distance, I feel that any racing is great training, and to be named the SA Sprint Champs Victrix Ludorum is a very nice achievement”. Hartley went on to say that “The competition has been good at this years SA Champs- things are looking positive for South African Sprint Kayaking as there are a lot of good paddlers taking part and there is a solid challenge for every race”.

Some of the most exciting racing of the weekend took place in the new Olympic 200m distance. In the men’s 200m events,  Rubenstein along with K2 partner Mike Arthur took the gold in a show of raw power and intense concentration. However in the K1 200m event, Arthur narrowly beat Rubenstein across the line to claim the top podium position.  In the Ladies K1 event, Jen Hodson and Hartley fought neck and neck over the 200m distance with Hodson finally surging ahead to claim victory by the narrowest of margins. Continuing this streak, Hodson and Tiffany Kruger, snuck across the line less than a second ahead of Hartley and Michele Eray in the K2 200m event.

Runner up to the Victor Ludorum title, Nick Stubbs, who showed incredible form this weekend with stellar performances throughout the competition, praised the work of CSA saying that “It would be very difficult to train as hard as we do without the support of the National Lottery Distribution trust fund and CSA”

Looking ahead, CSA High Performance Co-ordinator Greg van Heerden is confident in the athletes’ progress and results: “The squad is looking good heading towards the Olympic Game in London in 2012. This trial showed that the squad has lifted their game, and will hopefully continue to lift their game heading toward the Olympic trials next year.”

In May, the newly selecting World Cup sprint squad heads off to Vichy (France) and Szeged (Hungary) to see how they measure up in the international Sprint Kayaking arena.

Supplimentary Trial on 14th April

Nagle Dam- In the first of the sprint trials leading up to the biggest weekend in SA Sprinting, Nick Stubbs and Bridgitte Hartley stamped their dominance on the impressive field, providing a small taste of the exciting racing in store for this weekend's SA Sprint Championships.

Stubbs showed his form early on in the sunny calm conditions with the fastest time overall in the mens 750m heats. In the final, Stubbs and Len Jenkins raced into first and second place respectively, an incredible ten seconds faster than their heat pace. In an impressive performance, Stuart Waterworth claimed the final podium position, while the surprise of the day was definitely Shaun Rubenstein, who had to settle for fourth, four seconds off the pace.  Rubenstein's failure to make it onto the podium over this distance is most likely attributed to the fact that Rubenstein, along with K2 partner Mike Arthur, have set their sights firmly on the new 200m Olympic event for London 2012 and have been training to shine over this distance.

In the Womens' 500m final, Hartley and Jen Hodson raced a nail biter of a race, with Hartley having just the final kick needed to claim first place, less than a second ahead of Hodson. It was an exceptional day of racing, with all of the top five ladies racing home in under two minutes.

Wednesday’s trial was the first of its kind in SA Sprint canoeing, and a big step towards ensuring the best possible combinations in the K2 and K4 teams heading towards the London 2012 Olympic Games. All athletes who wished to be considered eligible for selection to the World Cup and World Championship squads in any of the men’s 1000m and women’s 500m events had to compete in this trial in a K1. The theory behind the men racing over a 750m course and not the 1000m distance that they will race in an event such as a World Cup or the Olympics in a team boat, is that a K1 race over 1000m requires a lot of endurance from the athletes, whereas a K2 or K4 race over the same distance, requires a lot more power and speed to get the boat moving. This has led selectors to conclude that racing a K1 trial over a 750m course would give a greater relative measure of each athletes individual power and speed as well as an indication of what they would be able to contribute to a team boat.

Although athletes raced in K1's,  this trial had no bearing on K1 selection, nor was it to determine partnerships- as selectors are aware that team dynamics, as well as fitness, play a major role in the selection of a successful crew. Wednesday’s trial was, more specifically, to give selectors an idea of what each athlete is capable of on their own relative to other athletes, as well as allowing selectors to gain knowledge of the potentially powerful combinations that could arise from this talented pool of athletes.

This weekend Nagle dam plays host to more exciting Sprint racing with four core events, the SA Sprint Championships, the Sprint World Cup selection, the reselection of the residential squad as well as the selection of junior athletes to attend the Youth Olympics.

The way these dedicated athletes have been training and preparing, it is likely that the level of racing seen this weekend at Nagle dam will be the highest ever, and as racing goes there may well be one or two surprises in store.

McDougall takes inaugural SA Schools Surfski Champs title

Durban – A stella evening of paddling ended on a high with Matt Bouman and Michelle Eder taking home the overall Varsity College Marine Surfski Series title, whilst youngster Terry McDougall walking away with the inaugural Varsity College SA Schools Surfski Championship.

On Friday evening paddlers flooded the shoreline of Ushaka Beach eager to make their mark on the final race of the series and with mildly choppy conditions the race was left wide open.

Bouman powered to the finish to win his ninth race of ten starts in the current series, whist having to make the best of the dark conditions. "As Durban gets closer to Winter it gets darker a lot quicker and we're still out there racing which makes is quite tricky," said Bouman.

The ace paddler will continue training through the Winter series and aims to peak at the Dunlop Surf Ski World Cup in May. "I've enjoyed this current series as the competition is always tough in Durban, which is good as it pushes me!" he added.

Michelle Eder of Amanzimtoti had a clean race and claimed her sixth series win ranking her as the overall ladies series winner. "It was a great race, a little hard to see out there when it got darker, but I got onto a doubles line and went deep and managed to grab some fantastic lines on the way back in," said Eder.

A field of 35 strong school kids signed up to compete in the SA Schools, including participants having travelled up from Port Elizabeth, Mossel Bay, Richards Bay and Cape Town.

"It's unbelievable to see 35 school kids doing surf ski racing," said organiser Barry Lewin. "I have to say a big thanks to Canoeing South Africa for such an innovative programme, which will certainly bid surf ski paddling great things in the future!"

McDougall of Durban Boys High School has ranked high amongst the juniors in the current series, yet having a strong field of competing school boys forced McDougall to power on to stay on top. "The runs were a little harder to catch and there was far more competition in the water than I'm used to," said McDougall.

He managed to hold onto his position claiming the title, whilst being chased by Jason Aubin and Luke McNish both of Port Elizabeth who came in second and third consecutively. Along with the title McDougall won himself a cash consideration as well as a R30 000 bursary to be a part of the Varsity College Sport 'n Life Programme.

His focus is now set on training ahead of the Discovery Sunglasses Hut Surf Ski Series as well as competing in the Dunlop Surf Ski World Cup set for May 16.

Toti starlet Kerry Segal of Kingsway High School took home the title in the ladies SA Schools race was listed as the dark horse in the line up after having raced the majority of the series in a mixed double. "I recall witnessing Kerry (Segal) take an unbelievable time in a recent 500m K1 time trial, which is fantastic for her U16 age group," said Lewin.

Segal enjoyed having the extra pressure of having various other female competitors coming up from other regions. "It was a hard race, but it was great participating in the first ever SA Schools Champs and Varsity College's involvement has really done wonders for the surf ski paddling," said Segal.

Alle' Bleue Berg River Dam, 26.5 km K2

Raced off in excellent conditions, Saturdays Alle’ Bleue Berg River Dam 26.5 km K2 canoe racing event drew some 77 paddlers – 66 in K2’s and 11 in K1’s - to the 2nd ever canoe race upon this pristine dam.

Set on a impressive backdrop of high mountain peaks and on crystal clear (drinkable – something that just doesn’t happen any more!) water, the race got under way under clear skies (cloudy over some of the nearby peaks) and a gentle North Westerly wind, that tended to abate as the race progressed.

These numbers were encouraging, especially as it is not the K2 part of the season and that the W.C.C.U. canoe sprint team was in KZN at the S.A. Canoe Sprint Championships over the same weekend.

Watched over by one of the resident Fish Eagles of this beautiful mountain dam, the top three K2’s of the day – Peninsula Canoe Clubs stalwart, Graeme Solomon and his young, new partner, Alastair Glass (who is a National Junior oarsman – he won his rowing colours when at Bishop’s and at U.C.T.), old-time partners, Ernest van Riet (Stellenbosch CC) and Heinrich Schloms (Paarl CC) and the family combination of Patrick (Peninsula CC) and Andrew Birkett (U.C.T.), set off at a blistering pace from the gun to split the field by the time the first turn was made up alongside the dam wall.

The two and a bit laps that followed saw these three crews exchange the lead several times, but this was merely for the purposes of slip-riding, until the final sprint home over the final kilometre saw the Birkett’s drop off, whilst Solomon/Glass and van Riet/Schloms sprinted for the line, the Peninsula crew taking the honours by 2 seconds in 1 hour 55 minutes 11seconds.  Van Riet/Schloms were 2nd in 1:55:15 and  the Birkett’s come home 3rd , 7 seconds off the pace in 1:55:20, putting these top three a full 5 minutes ahead of the next canoe across the line, that of Veteran’s Chris de Waal and Frohann Visser (Mil/SOS), who were in just over the 2 hour mark.

Showing his class in his K1 and as the 1st K1 paddler home, Stellenbosch’s U23 paddler, Pierre-Andre Rabie came in well ahead of 2nd place Mynhardt Marais (Paarl) and Johan Swart (Southern Swells) although it must be said that both Marais and Swart are paddling as Sub Masters – i.e. 45 – 49 years age group – so, excellent racing from them, because it is a long way in a K1 when there is no flow (as on a river) to help.

An interesting tussle for the Sub Grandmasters class developed between the ‘new’, yet ultra experienced crew of Lionel Ekermans and John Lee (Milnerton) against the crew who have paddled for 3 seasons now, Rob MacLean (Peninsula) and Andre Rabie (Paarl), which saw the Milnerton crew chase all the way to the finish to end just off the pace, 1 second adrift and in 13th place overall. This sets the scene for some excellent K2 master’s racing this coming season.

The first Mixed Double home was Stellenbosch’s Mike Owen and Robin Kime – 8th overall and in the very good time of 2 hours 4 minutes and 52 seconds. They had a ding-dong battle with the Sub Masters crew of Peninsula’s Rob Hart/Garth Watters, such that these two canoes could only be separated when the crossed the line by 100ths of a second!

Thanks are to Alle’ Bleue Wine Estate (Franschhoek valley) who sponsored the main prizes along with The Paddle Centre in Fish Hoek and to Paarl Canoe Club for organizing the event and setting up the course (in weather conditions the previous evening reminiscent of a blustery day on False Bay and therefore only good for a surf ski! – thanks to Herbert Conradie and Burger Coetzee for this).

SWIFT WATER COURSE

Unfortunately we had some 11th hour cancellations, however

the following attended & successfully "survived" the 2 day

course. Umko was at a lowish 1.1m as we got onto the

river Saturday lunchtime; however, this changed during the

afternoon, whilst we were on the section above Hella Hella,

duly rising to 1.5m. which made for a good on-river practical

session. Sunday was also good with an acceptable 1.3m.

Given the reasonable river levels we're currently experiencing,

there may very well be another course, or 2 before June; so

watch this space for the advisory.

I did the Midmar Dice this evening with Steve McKean (5 boats is hardly a dice) and we and another double got off the water early. I helped Steve to load his double and left my paddle on the lawn near the slipway.  As I was leaving a K3 and a double came in.  The one paddler was from Build It.  When I got home I realised what I had done and rushed back to find it, but it had gone.  I assume that one of the 5 guys picked it up.  Please could you ask if anyone has it?  It has my name on it and my number – 9319 and is a black Knysna racing paddle (Bratcha IV).

Cheers
