web: www.canoesa.org.za ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Message from the President Hello there Very brief but exciting news – our Junior Elite paddlers left for Moscow last week to attend the World Junior Sprint Championships this weekend and this Saturday our Senior National team jets off to Canada for their World Championship event to be held 12th to 16th August in Dartmouth near Halifax in Nova Scotia. So this weekend I will be eagerly awaiting sms reports on the junior results and I am certain not to be disappointed because this is a group of young, dedicated and very talented paddlers. There are details in Marc Cloete's article below and a letter from Debby Bird gives a glimpse of reality. And then our National Senior team leaves for Canada on Sunday and I will be joining them today for a press release in Johannesburg. Marc Cloete has used his magic media wand and collected together about 30 media personal to attend a function at Dabulamanzi Canoe Club with the National Team. It is great to know that we are starting to get the media attention our star paddlers deserve. So watch the press for all the glory surrounding these great guys, namely Shaun Rubenstein, Michael Arthur, Len Jenkins, Greg Louw, Nic Burdon, Nic Stubbs, Stuart Waterworth and Cam Schoeman and of course our World No. 1 ranked lady Bridgette Hartley. And finally, more good news - I will be joining the Geriatskis’ for a paddle on Saturday morning. My partner is a rather grey haired old man who has a couple of broken ribs so I am hoping to be able to keep up with him (don’t know what kind of drag we will have on our boat though) – so Hank bring your tennis balls and you can look forward to some serious competition! Kindest Merrill 0000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 National and International News Junior Sprinters Ready For World Championships Moscow - The national U18 Junior Kayaking squad is gearing up the highlight of its year at this weekend’s Junior Sprint World Championships in Moscow, Russia. The squad arrived on Sunday and have spent the week touching up final preparations for the regatta, which starts tomorrow and runs to Sunday. The Junior World Championships include the 1000m and 500m distances only, and South Africa has athletes entered in the K1, K2 and K4 categories. All the heats take place on Friday, with the 1000m distances in the morning followed by the 500m races in the afternoon. The winner of each heat progresses directly to the Finals, while positions two to seven advance to the Semi-Final round. Saturday sees the 1000m Semi-Finals in the morning, and the 1000m Finals taking place in the afternoon, while the same schedule takes place on Sunday for the 500m distance. The squad is made up of six girls and seven boys, along with coach Atilla Adrovicz, team manager Mike Chiazzari and assistant manager Debby Bird. The athletes have had a solid build-up over their school holidays in June, where they attened a training camp at Nagle Dam alongside the senior sprint squad. Morning and afternoon sessions at the camp will have conditioned them well for the rigours of international competition, and the country will be hoping they can mix this with the necessary mental strength and translate all the hard work into A-Finals qualifications or even medal performances. Junior SA K1 1000m champion Martin van den Bergh has chosen to focus on the team boats for the Championships, and he will be partnered by Stu MacLaren in the K2 1000m and 500m races. Chrisjan Coetzee will step up as the sole K1 competitor across both distances. The boy’s K4 has had some boat problems during the week, but is not ready to launch their attack on the regatta. Amongst the girls, the Western Cape’s Melanie van Niekerk will carry the K1 hopes in both the 1000m and the 500m. Still U16, van Niekerk has already established herself as the country’s premier junior female athlete, and with a further two years in the U18 age group, she will have nothing to lose this weekend. The K2 partnership of Esti van Tonder and Kerry Segal will represent the country in the K2 category, while there is also a K4 boat entered for the 500m race, made up of Lindsey Davis, Jenna Ward, Brittany Peterson and van Niekerk. A lengthy flight to Moscow via Egypt meant the 16-strong team were very relieved to arrive at their hotel on Sunday, and the group has spent the week sorting out their accreditation, doing final boat checks and fitting in the mandatory shopping and sight seeing trips. The hotel is a 20 minute drive from the race venue, and a bus runs every hour for convenient transport. The European countries lead the way in international sprint kayaking, but South Africa has produced it’s fair share of talent over the years, and the World Championships will be a good marker for the sport’s future stars. With the build-up all but over, the team is now eager for proceedings to get underway. Racing starts each day at 9am, and results will be available online at http://jwch2009.kayak-canoe.ru// Marc Cloete And a Letter from Debby Bird Hi all, from a hot Russia. Let me tell you about our trip so far............. The flight from Joburg to Egypt was looooooong! Plane pretty full. Male stewards from hell! They clearly don’t enjoy their job. Everything was a mission. I had a young Chinese kid (about 2 yrs old) in front of me who screamed/cried for most of the trip. Mom then screamed back at her. Made for a pleasant trip!! Egypt was incredibly hot & air conditioners not too effective. The airport had 3 shops with lots of empty shelves, needless to say not much duty free shopping happened. Flight to Russia in a small plane that was packed, no movie, nothing! We were very relieved to land in Russia. Although poor Darren’s luggage went missing. We were very efficiently met at the airport by a driver in a big luxury bus. The 2 drivers spoke a bit of English which was a great help esp. when we wanted to buy sim cards. Our drive to the hotel was quick. The exterior of the hotel is a sight to behold!!! My word!! But once inside it is really nice. The rooms are fine too. The dining room is huge which is just as well cos most of the world are here. It is really exciting seeing teams from everywhere including Iran, Kazakhstan, Mexico etc etc. I am going to take a photo at a meal time once everyone is wearing tracksuits. Will look cool! The food is good but is becoming monotonous. The food is basically the same for breakfast, lunch and dinner, with just a few differences. BUT i’m not complaining. I was dreading eating gross stuff. MONDAY: We visited Red Square the first day. St Basils Cathedral is really beautiful. The shopping centre called GUM was really beautiful but incredibly expensive – so much so that you think they might charge you to look. Stunning shops but only big name brands like Armani etc. We gave the kids a couple of hours there but most spent their money at the souvenir vendors outside Red Square. Some good bargins. The trip on the Metro was an experience. No one talks English and just shrug their shoulders & are all dashing off to work or somewhere. We gaily hopped on the train to Red Square not thinking to look at the name of the station where we climbed on!!!! But clever Matt had taken a photo of the station sign. A nice Russian lady sitting next to me told us when to get off at Red Square so that was fine. We went back to The Metro station to go home and walked in the OUT door!! Good start. I am amazed that there are no signs or notices in any language except Russian – even at the tourist sites. Anyway..so we wander around the station trying to find someone who will help us. We show them the pic on Matt’s phone but even the station workers don’t help! Eventually we were helped & hopped on. Those doors slam shut so quickly that we all jump in so fast that the locals think we are mad! When we get off & go up to street level we see that we are in the wrong place. Wander around. Tell a taxi driver the name of our hotel & he shrugs!! So we go back underground & they say we got out 1 station too early. I had to buy another ticket for everyone.. (lucky for the contingency fund!!) Then we got back. It was quite an experience. Turned out that the sign Matt photographed wasn’t the station name but the line name! Although it hangs in the middle of the station. That evening Titos (or however you spell his name) arrived. (he was driving the boat trailer from Hungary). He was stopped at the border post for over 6 hrs, The Russian border officials really gave him a hard time. They fined him cos they said the K4 was too long!! They also made him take all the boats off the trailer so that they could photograph them! Once through & driving, one of the k4’s – the boys – fell off and the nose and back cockpit got damaged. Damaged too much to repair in time to race. TUESDAY Breakfast ay 7.30. Buses transport to the race venue every hour on the hour. First bus at 9am. So we all met & hopped on the 1st bus. The trip takes about 20 minutes. The venue is really nice although I thought the water would be more protected. The boats were all set up etc and all went for paddle. The boys then tried the girls K4 in case they need to use it. The stadium was used quite a while ago judging by the weeds but there was a lot of frantic activity & painting going on. New jettys/jetties were being put in. Change rooms are brand new etc. Nice big tents for us to use with boat racks & a change room at the back. It didn’t take long for the SA flag to come out. After lunch we sorted out accreditation so we are all officially here now!! Then...the girls wanted to go clothes shopping..............sound familiar???? Strangely some boys also wanted to shop!!! So once again we get on the tube but now we know what we are doing – sort of! At Red Square is an entire shopping mall 4 stories deep UNDERGROUND!!! So the shopperaholics were in their element. The rest went to go inside the Kremlin grounds. They stopped us at the security check in cos our bags were considered too big as we had them slung over our shoulders. We had to store them. Poor Gregor ran back to the storage place with our bags. We had to go thru a metal detector to get into the grounds & then showed our ticket. We didn’t go into the actual scary Kremlin cos that is closed off but we could wander around the grounds which had several beautiful old churches with paintings on the walls from the 14th Century. Saw the big Tsar bell I told you about in a previous newsletter. Naturally there were security chaps around. Then we met up with the shoppers who had had a ball. Darren bought some clothes as his bag was still not found. Easy peeesy onto the Metro & home. Everyone had sore feet from walking. Wednesday TODAY Breakfast at 7.30. We had to queue for a bus. They are well organised. They have a fleet of luxury busses lines up down the road. As one bus is full & pulls off so the next one moves forwards. People drive on the right here and the max speed is 80. Everyone sticks to the limit. I often look the other way cos the driver gets so close to others! Traffic cops have a whistle that they blow and everyone reacts. In South Africa the music would be so loud that the whistle would be drowned out. Attila, Titos & Mike went to the course before us to try arrange another K4. They got a bit lost and Titos made a U-turn. They drove off and about 2km down the road they got pulled over by the cops. They were spotted on video camera!! There are cameras everywhere – like Big Brother. Luckily they pulled out the SA flag & were let off! The guys all had a good paddling session. Nelo seem to be prepared to hire a k4 to us so things are looking up. At 1.25 we had boat control. My word but do they check the boats closely. They even use spirit levels. They measured length too. Then we came back to the hotel to have a late lunch and relax. Darren’s luggage is found so Mike & him are off to the airport in a taxi. That’s it for now. Sorry it was so long but had to catch you all up!!. Cheers Debby GOOD NEWS – WE HAVE A K4. A NELO. Their new clubhouse has risen like some sort of fantastic Phoenix from the ashes of the disasterous fire shortly before last year's K4 Champs, so no tents in the soot this year, the new facilities are excellent. UMZ are on a big drive to attract more out of province teams to the champs and will be embarking on a promotional drive shortly. More news soon but get started on that K4 training! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- HANSA POWERADE FISH Once again I have the privilege of being involved in the Hansa Powerade Fish Canoe Marathon. This year we are hosting the SA K1 Championships. The first meetings with organisers and sponsors have been held, making sure the Fish remains a “not-to-be-missed” event on your canoeing calendar. A number of very important points were raised after 2008’s marathon by participants and these will receive our attention for the 2009 event. The organising committee will always remain open to any suggestions and ideas from you the paddler and, where possible, we will make every effort to accommodate you. Our newsletters will keep you well informed on organisational developments. The entry form is up on the website as well as online and in the August issue of SA Paddler there will be a “Fish” surprise! The key objective of the meeting was to see how the two Federations could work together to push for the inclusion of Canoeing into the 2016 Paralympic Games. The Va’a boats have been identified as excellent for single blade races for disabled paddlers alongside conventional Kayaks. Charles Villierme, Va’a President, said, “From the first Va’a World Championships in 1984, the then ICF 1st Vice President remarked how the ICF could easily work with Va’a. Today, I will push hard to have a close relationship with the ICF, in particular, working to have disabled paddlers in the 2016 Paralympic Games and also to work together to develop more Va’a and canoeing activities in Oceania and the South Pacific.” The ICF and the IVF are well underway to complete a global agreement for long term cooperation. The other topics discussed included the technical requirements pertaining to the sports, rules and regulations, different ocean racing formats, V1/V2 boats without rudders and using officials for competitions. Talking about the overall meeting, the ICF President, Jose Perurena commented, “The meeting was held in a positive atmosphere with a 100% collaboration which is positive and complimentary for both IFs. Agreements to work together for disabled paddling and other mutual topics are encouraging.” ICF and IVF will now work on finalising the agreement and start to work on achieving some of the objectives set out in the meeting. 00000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 Morsie’s Berg In ERK there is normally only one guy that does Berg, and that is Dirty Harry. But this time he took four novices (1st timers for Berg that is) with him: Morsie, Shrek, Badger and Jarryd. Now these dudes had an agreement, they are a team ek se’, a team from ERK, they are going to stick together and help each other out, like true mates my broer. So on Berg day one at the time trial, Morsie is expecting the team to stick together, then they sprint off and leave him behind. Now Morsie is a oke that paddles plastics (you ever tried to sprint in a plastic), so he kind of got left on his own. Someone told Morsie that Berg is flat water, so he brought an Eagle K1 along to paddle (this type of boat is fractionally less stable than a plastic), so every 100m or so he fell out ek se’. But being the fighter he is, Morsie was able to refine his technique and managed to only fall out every kilometer or so. He only saw the rest of the ERK team at the end of the days paddle, with friends like these who needs enemies? But there was some justice, two of the other team members got Dusi guts. Dusi guts on the Berg? Ja my broer, there was ecoli in the water there, or perhaps they just didn’t drink enough wine. So on the last day, day four, Morsie is still in the race, heng this oke must have nerves of steel, or maybe there were no nerves left, the river flattens out and goes wide, moerse wide, the river was flooding ek se’, in fact you couldn’t even see where the river was, there was no flow there was just water everywhere. Morsie had a GPS, but it only told him how far he had paddled, not where he was going, he had bought it next to the road at the robot from the dude that sells cellphone chargers. So there he goes paddling the wine route, and he comes to this farm house and asks the boer where the river is. The boer tells him to carry on till he sees some reeds and then keep them on his left. Half an hour later Morsie paddles up to these local guys sitting on a fallen tree trunk and drinking from a jug of vaaljapie. He asked them where the river was. “Neigh, die rivier, hy loop daai kant toe”. He had to go back the way he had come. Eventually, Morsie got to the finish as the people were packing up. His GPS told him that he had paddled an extra 30km. They gave him his medal – goeie gonners/man oh man/ donner, he sure deserved it. (The locals had trouble with "Morsie" and shortened it to "Mossie". The other three did feel quite bad for abandoning him so they all went to the prizegiving to help them fell better and then came back to wait. Someone suggested going to look for him but that was strongly resisted by the rest in favour of relying on Yebo-yes technology, and finally the call came in and so did Mossie - ED) 88888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888 The Weekend Past EC St Frances Canal Challenge results attached as well as East London Downwind series results 1st two races ---------------------------------------------------------------- GA VLC Ad-Hoc Klip It was a superb idea from VLC to host an additional race on the local Klip River to enable novice and learner paddlers who are needing to earn river race points in order to qualify to do A grade river races – i.e. FISH and it must have been appreciated as 78 boats participated! nearly 120 paddlers. A special note of thanks to VLC for the extra effort put in during recent months training and preparing novices, organizing river learning trips and proficiency trips as well as the goodly number of races provided by the club to assist paddlers with training and experience – it is much appreciated. It was a fabulous sunny winters day but the chill in the water is undeniable and my heart went out to those who were in unavoidable swims as the cold definitely took your break away! Especially the lovely young lady who swam because of a blockage against a tree stump just after the put in at Henley Weir where some 10 / 12 boats were congested against each other. It could have been caused by a boat coming in from the FAR RIGHT channel which got stuck. The middle line is the best but preferably in single file! The 48 K2’s were a big group and all arrived almost simultaneously at the Henley weir and all tried to get through the narrow gap between the tree logs very close to each other which is a very good reason why batching the groups is so beneficial however the quickest way to batch for such small races is by age groups and then we have complaints from top paddlers who don’t want to be reduced to their categories especially when they are competent to race against seniors. So – you can’t please everyone obviously! Nevertheless safety is an important factor and weighs against all other complaints so it is highly likely that batching will need to be encouraged. This congested group of paddlers lost a lot of time sorting themselves out and getting round the tree trunks, climbing over them and even swimming to get out of the blocked bunch. On a positive note, the timekeeper was pleased to advise that this was the FIRST race of the season where there were NO queries on proficiency or registration – everybody seems to have the act together at last and are now getting ready to take on the bigger A grade rivers! Furthermore, no disqualifications either – so start and finish the race went smoothly! Well done to winners Alex Robert and Gavin Payne (Dab/ERK) who won the last race in first and second K1 as well, finishing in probably the fastest time on the Klip this year if not ever – 1:10:25. In second place VIC’s Roland Smith with imported KZN paddler Mark Mulder in 1:13 – always nice to see Mark back in Gauteng! Third place was niched by young FLCC rising stars up and coming junior paddlers who are starting to take on the adults at time trials and races – young Under 16 Emile Theunissen and partner Under 14 Dugan Afonso – becoming a pair to be reckoned with and finishing in 1:15:38. Winning Subvets were Douglas Jewson and Rory Morgan (DAB) in 1:17, and the winning Sub Masters were Bruce Banfield and Hardus Theunissen (FLCC) in 1:19. The first mixed double finished were ERK partnership Clinton Fox and Kirsty van der Merwe in 1:22 and the winning Masters – Carrol and John Evans from FLCC in 1:23 second Mixed double . With first place K1 being Clint Munro of ERK in 1:22 and second place K1 bringing in Serge van Hee of FLCC in 1:24 that brings in 50% of the top field to 15th place being FLCC paddlers which as pointed out by the Chill Challenge organizers is no doubt a result of the winter time trial training program incentive! The winning K3 of three participants were Willem van der Merwe with Alan Robb and mitzi Claassen from DABS in 1:31 which was also the first SG finished at the race. Since it was a K2 race the first Vet boat was Watuni’s pair – Dirk Odendaal and Cobus Malan in 1:34, and Franz Fischer with Rodney Carpenter from JCC/ERK in 1:35 as the first double K2 Sub Grandmasters. Deryck Armour finished as the first and only GM in a K3 in 1:35 – with Lionel Benham and Mike Wilmot regulars in this category – off to AUSSIE to do the Avon, and the rest of the Grand masters sensibly staying home in bed where it was warm and cosy. The scout connected catering team was once again highly appreciated with hot tasty curry, bacon and egg rolls/burgers/hot chocolate etc a superbly delicious way to end off a couple of cold hours on the river and much enjoyed! Some exciting races coming up in the weeks leading up to FISH as paddlers put in the mileage and obtain the exposure needed! This race, steeped in legend over the years because of its difficult navigation through bush, Palmiet channels, rapids, ‘waterfalls’ and bridges, did not disappoint the 50 plus paddlers who braved the ice-cold, yet crystal-clear, waters of this picturesque river and the 2009 race will no doubt add to the myths associated with it, what it offers and the inevitable war-stores that go with it, year-in and year-out! And this year was no different when, soon after the start, on a medium to low (and as a result, very tricky) level and in virtually the first bushy, Palmiet-lined set of channels, the eventual race winner, Heinrich Schloms, took an incorrect channel (when his way forward was blocked by another canoeist). When he finally managed to get back to the main flow of the river, he was faced with the prospect of having to paddle past most of the rest of the field who had taken another, clearer channel in the river bed! Catching the front bunches by the time he had reached the Algeria bridge, where the floods in recent times had built the sand up against the bridge so much, that a front end loader had to be used to clear it for safety and road use, the race was on to find ‘The Waterfall’ rapid, some 2 -3 km downstream following a quick portage over the bridge. Here Schloms made up the time when van Riet and van der Westhuizen missed the channel taking them down to ‘The Waterfall’ rapid, whilst Schloms found it. With van Riet and van der Westhuizen needing to portage out of their predicament, Schloms, with clear water in front of him, was able to make up the gap so that the final sprint in to the finish line on Day 1 of the race, was between Schloms and van Riet, Schloms taking line honours by 2 seconds with van der Westhuizen a further 8 seconds back to arrive as the 3rd canoe home. As the rest of the field came in, reports of bushwhacking to almost ridiculous levels, but in line with what can be expected on this amazing race, kept paddlers and spectators alike amused for hours afterwards and this was played out at an almighty party at the Quad bike farm that evening that ran well into the night! An early start for day 2 at Biesiesvlei, some 20 km upstream from Citrusdal, saw a number of sad-looking paddlers (after the previous evenings excesses!) line up on a much narrower section of river, to be released on elapsed time so as to avoid the chaos of a massed start on a narrow, ‘twisty-turny’ river that would detract from the overall reason for the race – i.e., of having fun and activity on one of the most pleasant river racing venues in the Western Cape. As a result, the top three paddlers from Day 1, Schloms, van Riet and van der Westhuizen, kept each other company to record an end-sprint to the Citrusdal bridge where they could hardly be separated. The final overall top 3 positions then went to Heinrich Schloms, (Paarl CC), with Ernest van Riet (Stellenbosch CC) coming in 2nd and Eugene van der Westhuizen (Milnerton CC), 3rd overall. The Women’s category, Lindi-May Harmsen (Milnerton CC), fresh from her 2nd place on the previous weeks Berg River canoe marathon, was the first woman home in an excellent 10th place overall, followed by novice paddler, Kirsten Penderis (Stellenbosch) in 2nd and Veteran paddler, Lisa Scott (Milnerton) in 3rd place. Umzinyathi Canoe Club were hosts for the first of the two Alexander Caruth races from Albert Falls Wier to the old Baynes Drift Bridge. This popular 16km stretch of the Upper Umgeni has been the starting point in the river racing careers of many of Kzn's paddlers and Sunday was no exception. Nearly 280 paddlers took part with almost fifty percent of them being B or C rated paddlers earning one of the six proficiency or experience points required for the big events like the Hansa Powerade Fish and Dusi later in the season. The good weather and gentle conditions, the Umgeni was flowing at 5cumecs, meant that all but two of the 191 boats that started the race completed the course. At the competitive end the race was promoted as a K1 event and first over the line was junior, Lance Kime from St Charles College paddling in Natal Canoe Club colours. He was followed home by NCC club-mate Trevor Hellens with Kingfisher's Clinton Bullard in third spot. Abie Adie, also from NCC won the women's race from KCC's Angelique Mulder who just managed to hold off the winning junior, Jenna Starr from Epworth and NCC. The UMZ race organising team headed by Neville Palmer and their sponsors, Alexander Caruth, USN, Caffe Pronto, Silic Logistics, Primi Polo and LMV Switchgear had a number of new prizes up for grabs and Natal Canoe Club with 41 entrants won the R1000 prize for the club with the most paddlers entered and Epworth claimed the R500 for the school in the same position with 22 entrants. The Albert Falls wier, only about a metre in height, but positioned just 200m from the start of the race, always produces some spetcacular thrills and spills. So Primo Polo had Wier WipeOut prizes on offer for the best "performance" on the day . Lawrence Blackbeard and Timothy Baker took this with a performance clearly inspired by the famous Inspector Clouseau. The Guppy race from Gum Trees to the finish had three real guppy entrants as well as the Lake brothers, Michael and Simon in a K2 several sizes too big for them. Dan Dillon won the true Guppy race from Sarah MacLoed and Casey Cawood. UMZ put a lot of effort into the event setting a high standard for the rest of the one-day race organisers this season. This section, arguably the best section of the Berg River up on which canoeists race, will set up the favourites for the rest of the series, but having said that, there are virtually no clear favourites at this stage of the season. Graeme Solomon and Gavin White (Peninsula) go into the series with a Bronze medal to show at the recently held S.A. canoe marathon championships, but as a new combination on the rivers, they may well find that the tried and tested combination of Heinrich Schloms (Paarl) and Ernest van Riet (Stellenbosch), and that of Lance King (Milnerton) and P-W Basson (Paarl), difficult to keep at bay. Whatever – these three crews set up the definite possibility of some thrilling encounters this season and the opening session from Gouda Bridge to Bridgetown will test the mettle of these (and all other K2 crews), as it can be a very uncompromising section of river. Amongst the ladies, set combinations are not well known, although if Robyn Kime (Stellenbosch), the 2009 Berg River Marathon women’s champion, teams up with her U23 K2 team mate Jackie Barnes – they were the U23 Women’s Gold and Senior Women’s Bronze medallists at this years S.A. canoe marathon championships, then they’ll be the women’s crew expected to set the pace. However, any K2 with Lindi-May Harmsen (Milnerton) in it will be a challenge to them. Starting with the massive tree block just 100 m from the start (under Gouda Bridge) – the organizers may have to move the start beyond this to avoid unnecessary carnage in the opening stages of the race – the section moves on through some tight stretches before encountering Black Rock Rapid and the inevitable question of whether or not to shoot it. Given the length of K2 canoes and the narrow Palmiet lined channel with a sharp left and right turn in the middle of it, it may just be prudent to portage on river right (that is, if the channel on the right hand bank isn’t navigable). After Black Rock, there are numerous narrow, false channels that can cause havoc before the long channel leading down to the Train Bridge and beyond. There has been a huge tree block in the main channel where the river passes under the bridge with a very sharp right/left turn through which a canoe can sneak, but K2’s at speed might cause some problems, especially when racing in line down this section. After Train Bridge and under the Heuningberg, there is at least one tree block that is completely across the river making for a compulsory portage on either river left (right up at the block) or on river right, provided paddlers beach some 30 m above the block. If the water level is favourable and canoes stacking up against the block allow it, some paddlers may be able to thread their way through it, but this is likely to be the long option – of course, as all Berg River paddlers know, the situation on this river can change from day-to-day, and so the way might even be completely clear (but this is doubtful!). After Heuningberg, the way forward is anything but clear and it will take sharp eyes and good river knowledge to follow the correct and strongest flow at all times via Ysterpen Rapid and other fast flowing sections down to the Drie Heuwels weir, which, at this level, should be no more that a shallow drop down the main tongue of the flow. Drie Heuwels should be about 20 minutes from the end of the race (at Bridgetown), but the way through the bush between the two is not clear at all and so paddlers are advised (as aforementioned) to make sure that they way they choose is clear. Perhaps the best piece of advice on this section is that which was given by one of the Berg legends, Gerfried Nebe, many years ago, when he uttered the immortal words…”After Drie Heuwels, go left, left and left again. Whatever you do, don’t go right!”. Will this advice still be pertinent on Saturday? Time will tell. The event starts at the Gouda Bridge at 10h00 – registration opens at 08h30. Instead of turning left into Lanzerac one just continues straight, the road will turn to the left and turn into a gravel road. 100m further you will go through a gate, the parking area and start is right there The finish will be at the Kompanjiesdrift river crossing beyond Spier. Just take the Kompanjiesdrift turn-off on the R310 and drive for a 1km until you get to the river. Water: Secured water release by the Dept. of Forestry and Water affairs will ensure adequate water in the river for and exciting race. (The water will be on-time this year! Rain is also predicted for later in the week so the water level may also be determined by the rain). River: This is a very exciting, fast flowing river. There are three weirs of which two are shoot-able and one will be a portage. There is one slightly difficult rapid (called ‘Stay Main’) which will be an optional portage – It is however not dangerous (see photos 003 and 009 attached). The rest of the river does not have big waves but is fast flowing and there are no pools. The distance is +- 20 km and about an hour and 20 minute’s paddle. Safety: The portage will be clearly marked as will be the weirs and Stay Main Rapid. Green lint on the river bank means go that way i.e. if there is a green lint on the left the rapid/weir should be shot there. Orange lint on the river bank means it is an optional portage i.e. the rapid can be shot – there will be only one of these. Red lint across the river means that it is a compulsory portage – there is also only one of these. There is therefore no need to have tripped the river before the time! There will be safety officers at all of the above mentioned points. Race Format: Paddlers will be started one by one – 30 seconds apart. The highest seeded paddler will start first. Obviously the results will be determined by the paddlers’ individual times. The reason for this is simply that the river is not big enough for a bunch to start together. It is a K1 race. The prize giving will be held at the finish at 12:15. Food and drinks will be available for sale. This promises to be an exiting, fun-filled race, close to Cape Town, running through the middle of the historic town of Stellenbosch and finishing in the vineyards beyond the town. Reasons to paddle: The most exiting race in the Western Cape (trust Ernest van Riet – would you really?!) Stay Main (the most exiting rapid in the Western Cape) Part of the Stellenbosch Wine Festival Water release guaranteed (and on-time this year) Close to Cape Town The river flows right through the middle of Stellenbosch town Lost of view points for spectators All competitors get a free plant (which cannot be smoked!).
