On Saturday 23rd July, the Marina K2 Mini Marathon heralds the start of the K2 (doubles) canoe season, which culminates in the Breede K2 Marathon in the Breede Valley, one of the iconic canoe races of the annual South African canoeing calendar. This is an ideal race for new canoeing partnerships (and old ones too!) to check out to see if they still can paddle in time, fit into their canoes (!), get their balance right and being on Zandvlei and through the Marina da Gama canals, is also excellent for those paddlers who are new or relatively new to the sport. With no rapids, weirs, overhanging trees or any other sort of obstacle one encounters on flowing river, the entire focus can be on how you and your partner paddle together. The race is also open to K1 (single) canoes as well as single and double surf skis and before, during and after the event, the PCC clubhouse will be open to dispense delicious ‘canoeing’ grub and drinks from a cash bar – what better way to spend a Saturday brunch than at Peninsula Canoe Club after a brisk paddle? |
