web: www.canoesa.org.za ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Message from the President Hello, Hectic week, I'll be brief! No, rearly! The sprinters are safely settled in Poland with the two World Cups ahead and with Bridgitte's great performace in the first one two weeks ago, all eyes on Posnan. All the best to all of them! Hank has his Molokai with the Aussies in his wake, well done! Locally the Discovery Mens Health Winter Ski Series is in full swing in KZN with the King of the Bay on Sunday. In the Cape the pre-Berg season is starting this weekend with the Paarl Skooltjie race and all around the country the marathon guys and girls are gearing up with provincial champs and trials for SA's now only a month away in Plet. Who says canoeing is a summer sport? All the best till next week, Merrill. 0000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 National and International News Canoeists Charged for Poland World Cup Poznan – The South African Sprint Canoeing team are gathered in Poland, ready to make their charge at this weekend’s Sprint World Cup on the artificial Lake Malta. The 9-strong team is spearheaded by national champions Shaun Rubenstein and Bridgitte Hartley, and will be quietly hoping for some medal-winning performances. After Canoeing South Africa decided not to send a team to the first World Cup in the Czech Republic, this will be the first international exposure of the year for most of the athletes. Rubenstein, Hartley and fellow Olympian Carol Joyce are no strangers to this level of competition, but the rest of the team is based on youth, and many of them have limited experience on the big stage. As part of the CSA High-Performance plan aimed at winning medals at the London 2012 Olympic Games, this regatta will mainly be used to test out the athletes’ mental aptitude, and team boat options. CSA High Performance Co-ordinator Marcus Melck is determined, but keeping his feet on the ground for the moment. “We want to do the best we can while at the same time recognizing that a lot of our paddlers are coming out of non-specific preparation, so we have to be realistic. These are the first steps towards London 2012, and the year after an Olympic Games is normally one of experimentation, building combinations and looking at the options.” Bridgitte Hartley, who was the only South African to make the trip to the first World Cup of the year earlier in the month, will be hoping for more success amongst some tough women competitors. Having won a gold and 2 bronze medals in Racice, she looks in good form and will be hoping to make the training she’s been doing in Hungary count. Hartley and Carol Joyce will compete in all K1 races – the 500m, 1000m and 5000m. Rubenstein meanwhile will be hoping to put the disappointment of missing out on the Beijing Olympic A-Finals behind him in his first international race since. His local dominance was confirmed when he won all ten events he entered at the SA Championships in April, but he will now need to step up to another level – albeit one he has enjoyed success in before. Nic Burden will compete alongside Rubenstein in the K1 500m, and together with Greg Louw, Len Jenkins and Nick Stubbs will race the K4 1000m. Attentive eyes will also be on the young K2 pairing of Cam Schoeman and Stu Waterworth, who have chosen to focus on their combination for the 500m and 1000m races rather than on any K1 racing. Greg Louw will team up with Nick Stubbs for the K2 500m, while Rubenstein and Jenkins will be hoping their endurance and tactical nous will benefit them in the K1 5000m races. The 500m and 1000m heats will take place on Friday 22 May, with semi-finals on Saturday morning. The 500m finals are on Saturday afternoon, with an overnight rest all the recovery the top paddlers will get before the 1000m finals on Sunday morning. The final longer distance 5000m races will be help on Sunday afternoon. This was done to fall in line with the Bochum sprint regatta who changed there dates. We obviously want our best athletes at all the events, hence the change. Most of our top marathoners are from a sprint back ground, and we want all our top competitors to take part in the marathon trials. SA Marathons will now be held on the weekend of 27th and 28th June 2009 on the Keurbooms River in Plettenberg Bay. This date is now final and will not be changed again. All paddlers can now book air tickets and accommodation for that weekend. NEW CLASS AT WORLD MARATHON CHAMPS (U23) ICF has announced that this year, there will be a new U23 class for K1 men, K1 ladies and C1 men. There is also a new class for C2 junior men. U/23 Marathon class – The U/23 class races one lap less than the seniors at World Marathon championships. U/23 class to race in the senior race at South African Marathon Championships, with a timed finish at the end of the necessary lap for the U/23 class. Should the U/23 wish to be consider for the Senior Marathon team, they will need to complete the senior race. Should they not qualify for the senior team, will then be considered for the U/23 team. The laps at SA Champs and World Champs are 4.3kms long. Paddlers will portage on every lap, between 100m and 150m. The different classes will race as follows: Junior Ladies K1 and K2, and Junior men C1 and C2 - 4 laps and 4 portages U23 Women K1, U23 Men C1, Junior Men K1 and K2 and Masters K1 and K2 - 5 laps and 5 portages U23 Men K1, Senior Ladies K1 and K2, Senior Men C1 and C2 - 6 laps and six portages Senior Men K1 and K2 - 7 laps and 7 portages. With a light offshore breeze prevailing, Vic Bay’s legendary right hand break produced five to six foot waves on the first day, moderating to four or five feet on the second and final day. Diminishing surf on the second day forced many contestants pushing their final point-chase rides ever closer to the rock-strewn promenade, producing some exciting rides and occasional hair-raising moments. In an intense battle for top spot in the Seniors event, 2003 SA champ Pierre Slabber (WP) wowed the crowd and impressed the judges with a consistently high standard of performance filled with aerial manoeuvres, sometimes twice on each wave, to earn a well-deserved first place. 2006 World champ Grant Kendrick (WP) took second while 2008 SA champ Malan Calitz (WP) took third place. In the Masters category, defending champion Chris Jones (WP) took top honours, with Neels Thiart and Percy Louw (both WP) taking hotly contested second and third places respectively. Jones’ performance was notable for his consistent choice of best wave in each set and maximising his point scores with powerfully executed manoeuvres in the power pocket. Western Province also made a clean sweep in the Veterans event, with new-comer Gerard Wilke taking first and Bruce Tavenor, riding his new design Bruski board, taking second. 2004 World finalist Ken Clements showed good style, taking the third place with a solid showing. The Ladies’ event was won by top seed and 2007 World finalist Sandra Pienaar from Eastern Province. Sandra amply demonstrated her world class abilities with fluid style and well chosen waves. Border’s Mary-Ann MacSherry and Catie Oelofse took second and third respectively. The hotly-contested New Age category, for 21 to 30 years age group, provided a huge upset when top seeded Border rider André Burger was out-surfed by WP’s Mike Wessels in the final heat. Wessels impressed the judges with superb wave selection, consistency and control, giving him the top spot. Third place went to Eastern Province’s Lee Bernette. Notwithstanding his narrow defeat, Burger then went on to acquit himself with a superb performance in the Tag Team event, performing three aerials on a single wave and also taking the highest wave score of the tournament. In the Junior category, a solid performance with impressive moves gave WP’s up-and-coming rider Gerhardus van Zyl first place, followed by Brad Cawcutt, also from WP, in second place and Martin Steyn of Border in third. In the Development category, Border’s Devan Kukaardt took first place with a smooth performance filled with well-executed manoeuvres, followed by WP’s up-and-coming new rider James Park-Ross second and Border’s Rian Smit third. These youngsters are showing promise of greater things to come and should be watched in future. In the Tag Team event WP out-surfed Border and Eastern Province for the second year running. The eight top seeded riders overall have been selected to represent South Africa in the prestigious Tag Team event at the World Waveski Surfing Championships to be held at Coff’s Harbour, New South Wales, Australia from 4 to 12 September 2009. The National Squad (chosen by division) is expected to be announced next week. The Tag Team comprises: Lyndon Storer (National Team Manager) Pierre Slabber (WP) Malan Calitz (WP) Percy Louw (WP) Willy Graser (WP) André Burger (Border) Ruan Brand(Border) Chris Jones (WP – reserve) Neels Thiart (WP – reserve) Released by the South African Waveski Surfing Association Media Liaison: David Park-Ross tel. 021 794 4091 / 083 556 1892 2009 SA Waveski Surfing Championships Results Held at Victoria Bay, George on 25 and 26 April Senior Category 1st Pierre Slabber - Western Province 2nd Grant Kendrick - Western Province 3rd Malan Calitz - Western Province Master Category 1st Chris Jones - Western Province 2nd Neels Thiart - Western Province 3rd Percy Louw - Western Province Veterans Category 1st Gerard Wilke – Western Province 2nd Bruce Tavenor – Western Province 3rd Ken Clements – Western Province Ladies Category 1st Sandra Pienaar – Eastern Province 2nd Mary-Ann MacSherry - Border 3rd Catie Oelofse - Border New Age Category 1st Mike Wessels – Western Province 2nd André Burger - Border 3rd Lee Bernette – Eastern Province Junior Category 1st Gerhardus van Zyl – Western Province 2nd Brad Cawcutt – Western Province 3rd Martin Steyn - Border 0000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 Hansa Powerade FISH Questions The organising committee of the Hansa Powerade Fish has started finalizing plans for the 2009 marathon. We would like feedback from paddlers on two aspects of the marathon. Firstly the construction of a double chute over Collett Weir, the first weir after a long portage on Day 1 directly after the start on the dam. The first proposed chute is to have a drop of 3m onto a rock shelf protected by a wall on either side and this leading to a second smooth-floored chute into the river. The reason for the second chute being smooth is to accommodate swimmers from the first chute to be swept downstream over the second chute safely. This obstacle will be well-planned and constructed by a recognised contractor, however it should be practised prior to the event. Secondly, we have been made painfully aware of horrific injuries sustained by paddlers not “ducking” low enough under Toastrack Bridge and we have decided to strongly recommend that paddlers wear helmets on Day 1. At this stage helmets are not compulsory, however, this being a marathon organised by paddlers for paddlers we would like to receive your input before further decisions are made. We must be aware that the safety of all paddlers is paramount to all concerned and it is along these lines that we as an organising committee have to base our decision making. Replies to

The event will also serve as the trial for the KZN team to attend the SA Championships on the Keurbooms river near Pletenberg Bay at the end of June. In line with the international trends in this discipline of canoeing the course for Saturday will consist of multiple laps of 4 km each with a 100m portage at the end of each lap. The final portage is then followed by a 1500m dash for the finish line. The various age-groups compete of different numbers of laps from the 3 laps of the U14's through to the 7 laps of the Senior Men. Racing begins at 09h00 from the main picnic site at Nagle Dam with the Junior and Master Classes. Once their races are complete the Men and Women, Senior and U23 will be racing from 11h30 onwards. Last Saturday saw a relatively poor turnout for the K1 section of the Championships at the same venue. Despite this there was very keen competition in both the Boys and Girls categories. Gauteng's Martin van den Bergh finally won the end-sprint by just 0.93 sec after a race long duel with Michaelhouse's Stuart MacLaren. Wining U16, Donovan Wewege from Maritzburg College took the third spot racing alone for the whole distance. U16's, Jenna Ward from 'Toti and Emma Horner from Natal Canoe Club broke clear quite early in the girls race and although they were then racing together sharing the pull, Horner's strength as a sprinter looked certain to give her the final win. But, as is so often the case, the portages, always a source of potential mishaps, took a hand. Horner missed her footing while re-entering the water at the end of the second to last portage and tipped her boat allowing it to fill with water. Ward took full advantage, gaining a critical 50m lead while Horner was emptying. At the end of the final portage Ward was still ahead but by only 20m and at the start of the final 750m straight to the line Horner was back in the front.but the effort of catching up limited her win to just 0.63sec in a very exciting final sprint. Lindsay Davis from Wykeham Collegiate took the third place. Just three boats contested both the Senior Men's and Women's races. Lucas Mthalane, Michael Mbanjwa and Ryan Louw circulated together the whole way in the men's race with Mthalane taking the final sprint. In contrast, the women quite quickly broke at about the half-way mark to circulate alone with Michelle Eray winning from Abby Adie and Angelique Mulder. Tiaan de Klerk won the better contested new U23 International class from Ryan Aikins and Eric Zondi. The final KZN Team will be announced on Monday. K1 Results Senior Men - 7 laps 1. Bouman made a clean break at the start going out through the moderate metre-and-a-half surf at Dairy beach, and as he turned for the first of three laps from Addington to Pirates he was alone at the front of the race. "After the start it was pretty much Indian file all the way to the finish," said Bouman, who has set his sights on the Mauritius and Durban Surf Ski World Cup events and feels that it is essential that the title is captured by a South African paddler. Top female contenders Michele Eray of Plettenberg Bay and Amanzimtoti star Michelle Eder provided a thrilling end to the women's race as they entered the shore break side by side. Both women struggled in the surf and fell out, but it Eray who made the best of the dramatic endsprint to run up the beach to the finish a boat length clear of Eder. "Michele (Eray) caught me on the third lap," said Eder. "We were about three or four waves apart at the end and Michele (Eray) took a little bit of a swim, which made for a close run up the beach with just metres between us." The strength of the women's competition has been a feature of the series, and is expected to increase week on week. "It makes for a great race when the ladies are close together and not just riding some guys wave the whole way," added Eder. Luke Chalupsky won the junior title, Herman Chalupsky took the sub-masters honours in third overall, and the evergreen Mark Lewin bagging the Masters title once again. The double ski category was won by Marc Germiquet and Warren Valentine, with the crew of Stretch and Colleen Struwig taking the mixed doubles honours. Water levels weren’t noticeably lower than in previous weeks and thanks to JCC Gavin Steyl, Martin Sly and FLCC’s Bertie Baard one of the channels at sportsground bridge had been opened timeously to enable paddlers to shoot the bridge instead of portage! The field consisted of 47 K2’s – the majority in this K2 race, and 25 K1’s, with a total of 72 boats finishing within the cut off – 119 paddlers – a good turnout for a chilly day. Winners Mike Harris and Brandon Collyer, also first SV, from VIC finished in a time of 1:13 followed by the first Under 21 – development paddlers from Soweto Canoe Club in 1:14 – Sabelo Radebe and Victor Monyepao. Third place winners were also from VIC – Gregory Smith and Andrew Winter in 1:16. The first Sub Master team of Ian Walker and Gavin Steyl from JCC finished in 1:18, with the next development paddling partnerships crossing the finish line in 1:18:46 also from Soweto Canoe Club – Siseko Ntondini and Sifiso Vincent Cebekhulu, while the first mixed double with young 14 year old Morgan Ziervogel from JCC with partner Ryan Simonato both from Johannesburg Canoe Club finished in 1:20 . The master boat from JCC finished in 1:25 with keith Beeston and Mark Hall and the Under 14 winners combination of Wilner de Swardt (DABS) and Dugan Afonso (FLO) completed the race in 1:27. Ladies team of Elize mare and Michelle Barker from Centurion finished their race in 1:33 and Veteran paddlers Timothy Baker and Gregg Hiscock from VIC finished in 1:37 . The singles race was won by Hannes Pienaar of Watuni in 1:22 and a special word of well done to Karen Field from Dabs who finished as K1 female in 1:55. Since it is early in the season and there are many new novice paddlers experimenting on their first races, there were a number of swimmers and incidents where paddlers got into some difficulties, although none serious, and help was available from fellow paddlers and sweeps – a couple of young men from JCC managed to sink their boat into a tree block near sportsground bridge but were able to rescue the boat intact using ropes and still finished the race before the sweeps, while a few others got stuck on rocks at Graveyard and needed assistance to free the boats heavy with water all successfully. It is always heartwarming to know that paddlers will always assist other paddlers even at the expense of their own race and we strongly encourage this comraderie on the rivers – you never know when you might need help. The clubs are working together more closely than in previous years, communicating regularly, making combinations to work together on clearing tree blocks and identifying how to encourage new paddlers to the sport. It was especially pleasing to note how many experienced paddlers escorted new learning paddlers in K2 down the river for their first races to give them opportunity to learn the ropes from someone with better ability and this is surely the best way to grow the sport and encourage new paddlers to participate! The hamburgers and bacon / egg rolls provided by the Henley Scout connection, were greatly appreciated in the chill wind after the race as was hot coffee and chocolate! Well done to Crocs for organizing a super race! Jennie Dallas GCU Tel 011 463 1173 WC The annual Novices 15 km K1 race held on the Berg River, between Dal Josephat Bridge, Paarl and Lady Loch Bridge, Wellington, was held on Saturday 16th May in fairly low water and very windy, conditions. Paarl Canoe Club members - the host club – did exceptionally well in this event (as can be seen on the results sheets following) and indicates that the club is obviously actively promoting canoeing in its area – well done to Paarl Canoe Club under its forward-thinking Chairman – Herbert Conradie and the club coach, Wayne August. A number of experienced paddlers also took part in the race to assist the novices as well as to have a first look at the Berg River prior to the seasons races that begin upon it next weekend. Thanks to them for being available to help the novices as they (the novices) experienced their first ever river race – something that tends to be rather intimidating the first few times around. The race was one by an U16 paddling sensation, Luke Stowman, who is not only one of the youngest paddlers to win a race in the W.C.C.U., biut also comes from the Paarl Development group. Luke paddle exceptionally well and in the company of such paddling lumiaries as Heinrich Schloms (Paarl) and Greg van Heerden (Mil) to record the excellent time of 52 minutes and 56 seconds. The Women’s event was also won by a Paarl CC member – Helene Rabie – daughter of well known canoeist and Fish River Marathon organisers, Andre’ and Audrey Rabie. The many smiling faces at the end of the event gave testimony that the race was a positive experience for all paddlers and that the W.C.C.U. canoeing novices look forward to competing in longer K1 river races and at higher river levels, where their new (river racing) skills will be put to the test. 2 photos are attached – these are of the( Paarl Canoe Club members) paddlers who won the Men’s and Women’s divisions of the race. Pic 1. Men’s Winner – Luke Stowman – Paarl Can Club. (Luke is also one of Paarl’s Development paddlers). He was also the 1st U16 paddler in. As it was a Novices race only, the other two canoeists in the photo with Luke Stowman, experienced paddlers Heinrich Schloms – left - and Greg van Heerden – right, accompanied the Novices. I suppose you can crop them out of the pic. if you want to. Pic 2. Women’s Winner – Helene Rabie – Paarl Canoe Club. The photos attached are compressed, but if you would like them uncompressed for publishing purposes, I can send them on to you. Please just let me know. (An administrative note here – paddlers doing this race MUST be registered with W.C.C.U. for the 2009 season, wear PFD’s (i.e. life jackets) and have taken their River Proficiency Certificates if they are Novices). The level of the river remains low, despite last weeks heavy rains, although at least it is higher than the race last Saturday – in addition, the weather prophets are promising clear skies and south easterly (i.e. from behind) winds, but no rain, so it should be a very pleasant day out in the Boland. This 21 km section of river between Paarl and Skooltjie has a number of areas to keep in mind – firstly, because of the lack of rain, the river is low, so it wont be wide enough to spend too much time slip-riding and so competitive paddlers will be looking to break away before obstacles and where the river narrows. Spectators and paddlers should be on the look out for places like the Market Street bridge Weir, 200-300 m after the start – question? is it best to shoot on the right or the left? Suggestion – register early, get onto the water and go and check it out before the race and see where it is easiest to get out on – left or right bank – getting in below the weir is pretty much equal on either side – remember, this weir is a COMPULSORY PORTAGE – it is just too dangerous to shoot (ask Barry Coltham!). Another 2km downstream is a very narrow ‘gangetjie’ before the flat section upstream of Dal Josephat Weir and bridge – this ‘gangetjie’ has a sharp left turn in it, so be aware and don’t let anyone hit the tail of your canoe as that will be problematic. The Dal Josephat Weir is very straight forward – take the ‘friendly V’ and follow the flow down under the bridge – try an avoid going too far to river right under the bridge, otherwise you will be forced up against the concrete which wont be any fun. Again – look for the main flow and be assured that there will be some bumps and scrapings here at this level. Below the Dal Josephat Weir and bridge, the river ‘stretches out’ and so slip riding becomes an option much of the way, but there are still areas and obstacles to look out for – the very large tree stump mid river about half way into the race, the rapid about 2 km before the Wellington High Level bridge – be careful here as there is a tree lying in it on the right hand side which is a known ‘canoe muncher’ – rather shoot this one mid-stream – and then below the Wellington bridge and to the Lady Loch bridge, look out for tree blocks and the old ‘Katryntjies’ weir, now a fairly easy rapid to shoot although it does flow in left and out right. Within a kilometre below Lady Loch, there is really only one potential problem – that is where the river sweeps down to the left where there are a number of low branches just looking to pluck an unwary paddler out of his/her canoe. At higher water, there is a sneak on the right, but it probably wont be working this Saturday. Approximately 1 ½ km from the end, the river flows through and between the remains of piles for an old, ‘no-longer-there’ bridge – whilst negotiating this should be pretty straight forward, it is possible to be washed up against one of these piles and there are the steel remains of the bridge in the water – best idea is to either miss these or ramp over them. All in all, a good opening to the river season where all the necessary river skills that a paddler needs will be put into place. The favourites for the Men’s division will no doubt come from those paddlers who have been dominating the earlier races of the season – Lance King (Milnerton), Graeme Solomon and Gavin White (both Peninsula), Heinrich Schloms (Paarl), Ernest van Riet and Pierre-Andre Rabie (both Stellenbosch). For the Women’s section, Robyn Kime (Stellenbosch) will probably dominate, but watch out for Jackie Barnes (Pen), Bianca Beavitt (Mil) and Jemma Hofmeyer (Pen). The race begins at 10h00 in front of the Paarl Canoe Club. Registration is from 08h30. Paddlers MUST be registered with W.C.C.U. (no temporary licences will be issued), MUST wear P.F.D’s (life jackets) and MUST have their racing numbers on the canoes.. Remember registration from 7h30 Regards Saal Important Notice! After consultation with Malcolm and Pete we decided to change the laps slightly. The seniors plus everybody else will now do 6 laps, a distance of 24.6 KM. This will give our top veterans and master the change to compete against each other and therefore get the experience they need for the SA K2 champs. The only exception will be the U/ 14 boys and all the junior ladies that will do 4 laps. A distance of 16.4 KM. The idée is to allow the good juniors to race against the seniors and create a more competitive field. There are also some veterans and masters that are kicking &*. I'm telling you this isthe way forward, I get to connect with positive motivatedigniters each morning. I am actually struggeling to describehow cool this has been. Little pic at the end for allyou softies. On Sunday night I tuned intosurfski.info for the Molokai coverage and watched as Hank wentstroke for stroke with Australian Clint Robinson for the 1st2hrs of the race, in unseasonal dead flat conditions(3rd Yearrunning?). It felt like they were both going out too hard. Allpredicted a 5hour paddle for the 50km Molokai crossing. Hank&Clint's pace was scary, averaging around 13-14km/hr.Some questioned the reliabilty of the information being sentover the net. It seemed they were going way too fast. - "There is NO WAY they can hold this pace",
- "They still have 2 hours to go, They won't hold out"
- "Smart money is to stay with the bunch"
Well Hank McGregorredefined the island crossing when 2hrs plus into the race,Olympic Gold Medalist Clint Robinson, could not hold the pace.Hank paddled his way into the Molokai record books coming home1st(3hr:54min), 3 minutes clear of second place TimJacobs(Aus). Hank arrived home in Durban today(wed) and a fewfriends were there to welcome our MolokaiChampion. Back home in Durban, I was onceagain taught a lesson by Mother Nature and Windguru this lastweekend. On Saturday I noticed a massive storm set to hitDurban right when Race2 was due to take place. I pushed out ansms pulling the race start 30 minutes earlier. I know that I may have put apeople off by insisting on leashes and talking of a SW buster.Fact is,SAFETY is FIRSTfor me,so I have no regrets. I would far rather have a smallcompetent team enjoying challenging conditions than a largeturnout and potential problems. As it was we had a greatturnout and an awesome race. On race day, what happened wasthat the storm passed through early and we were left withmagical conditions for the PowerAde race on Dairy beach. They stayed at a place on the flat water section of the river some distance below Visgat. The okes, Brendon, Hennie and Matt, decided to paddle up river to go and shoot Visgat. So off they go ek se', paddle up river, not something an oke normally does, but ja, if you are staying on the water and you want to go somewhere, why go by road, paddle there. So they hit the first ripples on that stretch after Visgat, ja Boet, a little bit of extra effort required here paddling upstream, and then they come to the weir, Visgat Weir. They get out on the bank, but not on the main drop side, there are some serious waves and some boat crunching rocks right where you don't want them to be, they go out on the chicken run side, and they go past a guy and his chick who are fishing in the pool above the weir. So the guy and his chick, who were probably from Vereeniging, and who were also enjoying the brandywyn and coke, checked these mal canoeists out who were carrying their boats on their shoulders and heading upstream on the bank. So the ERK dudes eventually get to the stretch of river above the approaches to Visgat rapid, and then they put in and paddle down to shoot the rapid, on the left side of course, the main drop is too kwaai, and they shoot down through the chicken run into the pool above the weir. In the mean time, the fisherman's chick had decided that the winter sun was nice and warm, the brandy and coke was even warmer, it was time to strip off and have a skinney dip. So there she is, bathing her beautiful bod in the Visgat Weir pool, when the ERK canorists arrive on the scene in their canoes at a rate of knots. She gets a big skrik ek se', she is a decent Vereening chick, she can't let any oke check her bod out, especially not when her frontal assets are enhanced by the cold water. So she turns around and bolts out of the water. One of the ERK okes said to the others "did you see that?" (Like you could not see it). "She looks like a mermaid" said his mate. "Nooit" said the other oke, " mermaids have tails, this one has legs, and besides she has the nicest ass I have ever seen". Ja Boet, all you okes that paddle the Klip, maybe you should consider the Vaal, it has clean water and maybe something else besides. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ EC Nando’s Knysna Lagoon Challenge For more information, contact: www.knysnayachtclub.com

Soon to be dad, Dawid Mocke will be flying in to give the locals a run for the money! This will be Dawid’s first time testing the waters of the East Coast. It will be interesting to see if the Champion can topple the podium from local experience and never–say-die East London paddlers such as Hennie Roos, Andrew Carter and Brendan Thompson, who know these waters better than the taste of a cold “Frothy Coke”, But they better keep an eye out for Evan “Speed” Ridge who is becoming as fast as the tyres he sells! Evan has been cleaning up the latest surf ski races and if he manages to steer clear of the 3 Sister’s breaking wave, (Which took him victim 2 years ago), he will be the one to watch! Will PE paddler Richard Wildermann arrive to prove his mettle, after an incredible race at the Kenton-on-Sea Downwind? In the ladies event, news is that PE paddler Kirsten Wessels will be ready to give it horns and show the boys how it is done! Overheard last night.. New Cape Town local might be a surprise entry! The Areena Downwind falls 2 weeks before the annual World Cup Surf ski event, so paddlers will be able to get some last minute training in and see how their competition fairs. FLATWATER GETS WILD! Local boy Jamie Thompson will be stepping up the competition with his training preparations for SA Marathons the week after the Areena Race. He will be closely watched by Jordan Tebbutt, Vaughn Warren and Kyle Friedenstein, who took top honours in last weekend’s BCC Closed Champs. GUPPY POWER!! The young guns race is hotting up with the Prodigy Kid, Josh Fenn, versus Tayne “The Man” Thompson, while Justin van Wyk is proving he can do it just like dad, but faster! It’s going to be a day of fast racing with all out action to the finish line and entertainment for the whole family as the annual Areena Downwind Adventure hits the East Coast on Saturday 20th June. Thanks to all our Sponsors for making this race possible! This is the time of year when the speedsters emerge from the gym, don their Superman outfits and climb into their skinny boats. Yup the sprint season is well underway and many of the KZN guys are involved in the upcoming Sprint Regatta’s taking place in Europe in places with odd sounding names like Bochum and Szeged. Bridgette Hartley did exceptionally well in the Czech World Cup last weekend winning a gold and two bronze medals and expectations are high for the forthcoming tours. With the Lotto money swelling CSA’s coffers the contracted athletes can at last look forward to some financial support in addition to which some good incentives are in place to reward athletes who excel in CSA sanctioned Tour events. For the rest of us winter is a time to chill out and tell tall stories of huge rapids and raging rivers to anyone prepared to listen. In September the river races begin again though so don’t get too comfortable on that coach. Good news for Maritzburg paddlers is that work has begun on dredging Camps drift. The job of removing 386,000 cubic meters of material is expected to finish before Christmas (uh, yeah I assume they mean this year!!) and will make a huge difference to the paddlers who train there. If the drift drops any lower the Dice could become a duathlon. Many thanks to the Maritzburg Municipality who are funding the project. To the ballies who have hung up their paddles for the winter: go easy on the pork pies. To the Speed Kings and Queens who have come out to play: give it horns. Mark Lynn Chairman. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ FEZELAUPPER UMGENI BEGINNERSRACE You may remember that this event waspostponed a few months back due to flooding on theUmgeni. Entries at the normal places orOnline atwww.kncu.co.za ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A WARNINGFROM THE PORT SAFETY OFFICER The paddle skis are not adhering tothe regulations and this has now become a high risk issue. Asfar as I can remember, paddle skis arenot allowed to enter and exit the harbour entrance andmay operate 1NM from the Durban PaddleSki Club. Many paddle skis are launching fromWilson's Wharfand most probably are not registered withthe port as well as they are not aware ofthe regulations and extreme danger when venturing intothe prohibited water area underconstruction as well as operating close to thedredgers. Steps will also be taken to policeWilson's Wharfin order to check on the legality of paddleskis entering the port in that area. Please could you once again advise all the clubs to notify theirmembers to refrain from operating in therestricted area. As a result of the above, thefollowing was issued by the Durban Pleasure Craft Committee(DPCC) Important Notice to all pleasure craft usingDurbanPort 1. Please note the yellow buoysdemarcate the construction area and no craft are allowed insidethese buoys. 2. No craft are allowed to approachthe dredgers in the entrance channel andbasin. 3. The dredge operators have blindspots when dredging and are unable to see smallcraft approaching. The Port has alreadyexperienced an incident with a ski boat capsizing as a resultof coming too close to thedredger. 4. Failure to comply with theseinstructions will result in all canoeists being banned from usingthe harbour. 5. With the writing of thebook on The History of KZN Canoeing coming on nicely, I am looking forcontributions from the KZN clubs themselves regarding their histories, achievements an anecdotes. The book will be of coffee table format, factual, yetinteresting and revealing something about the characters, personalities andevents that have occurred in KZN Canoeing History. This is a call to yourcommittees and local scribes and historians to send me information about yourclub and any other peripheral information you have. It is exciting writing thisbook, like uncovering an ancient tomb and I know the truth often takes manydifferent paths. All information pertaining to your clubs will be verified bythe individuals mentioned and a final draft will have to be approved by yourcommittee to avoid the curse of the pharaohs. So I now need what you havegot, by email or on disc, as detailed as you like and with referencing if it'sneeded. What follows is aguideline, but please feel free to adlib and flesh out. I would like it by the endof May but before the end of June as I need to assimilate it into what I'vealready got and start some serious editing.
