DOWNLOAD FULL RESULTS HERE The 38 km section of the Breede River that was raced as part of the K2 (double canoe) season, was held on a low Breede River, that tested all competitors, as paddling in shallow water is always more difficult and in addition, canoes tend to take strain on the ‘bonier’ stretches, not to mention the steeper drops at obstacles such as Secunda Weir, scenes below which resembled a swimming gala at one stage of the race, so many paddlers had capsized! The South African sprint team rounded off the world championships at the frenetic Szeged venue with a sixth in the men's 200 K1 relay - the final event of the regatta, after bagging three C finals on the closing day. |

Szeged, Hungary - South Africa’ sprint queen Bridgitte Hartley fell tantalizingly short of securing her place at the London Olympics as her teammates battled the Hungarian heat and intense atmosphere of the world championships. Hartley put the smiles back on her teammates faces as she won the 500m B final in decisive fashion, providing a morale booster the team that one day battled the heat, tailwind and intense competition for qualification berths for the 2012 London Olympics.Her blisteringly fast time winning the B final was faster than the A final winning time, but it leaves her ranked tenth in the world, and shy of the top eight qualification for the Olympics, re-opening the debate about the qualification process. |
